Savage F-Class 6.5-284 report

Hey guys, Well I just got my F-class in a couple weeks ago. And have been waiting on my reloading stuff to come in for break-in and accuracy testing. So far heres my results.

First of all. all groups are at 100 yards. Im shooting off the ground F-class style with a Caldwell 1000yd rest and a caldwell rear bag. I need a different rear bag as the one I have now doesnt fit the stock very well. The scope Im using is one I took off another rifle. Its a Bushnell Elite 3200 Tactical 5-15x40, with the target turrets.

Most of the groups were shot with Nosler brass straight out of the box. and a few Lapua brass, also straight out of the box. I havent got my bushings for neck sizing yet.

I used only the Sierra 142gr Match Kings and 3 different powders. H4831sc, Reloader 22 and Vv N165. All primers were Federal LR match.

With the H4831sc I started at 48.5gr and went to 50.3 grains in 1/2 grain steps. These were shot out of the Nosler brass. and 3 shot groups.
48.5gr = .244"
49gr = .657" I jerked one shot
49.5gr = .342"
50gr = .317"
50.3gr = .542" Also jerked one shot

Next I tried RE-22istarted at 48gr and went to 52.5gr. I didnt even measure 2 of the groups as I was shooting at yellow dot and couldnt see them very well.
Of the 3 I got off some good groups they were.
51gr = .386"
51.5gr = .567" ith one jerked shot, 2 were in one hole
52.5gr= .179" Also shot a 5 shot group with this load, including the fouling shot it went .457" and 3 in to .221"

The Vv N165 I tried 51.5gr to these were Lapua brass with alot of neck tension. It would shoot several groups with 2 shots very tight and then throw one out. It was most likely me.

51.5gr = .619"
52gr = .262"
52.5gr = .658" 2 shots were .020"
53gr = .389"
53.5gr = .664" 2 shots were .038"
54gr = .455"

I think im going to continue working with the H4831sc and the RE-22, as I seem to have had better luck. I aslo need to work out a better shooting posistion, as Im not 100% comfortable behind the gun.

All in all, Im very pleased with the gun. And would HIGHLY recomend one to someone wanting to get into target shooting whithout alot of cash outlay. And by the way I am by no means a long time target shooter. The guns just good.

Ill try to post some pics of the gun and targets when I find my camera.

Most people use around 49 grains of H4350.

Welcome to the world of target shooting and F-class. You'll find that you spend alot of money to shrink groups only a fraction.

Also start putting money away for a new barrel :)

I dont actually shoot any competitions yet. I want to shoot at the Prince gun range 600yd match once I get a load worked out.

I also need to work on getting the gun more secure in the rear bag. Its moving around quite a bit and Im having to prop it up with my left hand and then pull the trigger. I think thats why I get the flyers sometimes. It also seems to happen when I get two good shots off and see it in the scope, and think one more and it will be a good group. Then, bam pull it off to the side.

On the barrel, Im thinking about a Broughton 5c as a replacement.

Let me know what you think

I bought my F-Class with a Weaver 36x about 6 months ago and I only shot it once as I've been working alot of O.T. lately. I loaded up 142 Sierra MKs and I seated the bullets about .015" off the lands with 48 grains of 4831sc in new Lapua brass that was neck sized. About 5 rounds out of 25 the bolt was closing very hard so I extracted the unfired round to see what was going on. I saw no marks on the bullet surface but some marks on the body of the cases. Do I need to be full length resizing new brass ? Any of you Savage F-Classers out there run into this ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

IndianHead.. On my rifle, I shot the Lapua brass straight out of the box with no problems. I do know when Im closing the bolt, I be sure to push it all the way forward. If I dont it seems harder to close. I dont know if thats what your talking about of not.

Im also curious to see what your results are with 48gr of the 4831sc. Do you have a crono? With 49.5gr I could only get to 2820FPS.. I switched to 52.5 RE-22 and its shooting 2930fps. and grouping good too.

Good luck,
Jerid

Blackhawk,
Have you tried any 4350 yet? Just curious as my F-Classer is about the same as yours. I'm using a Beta Chrony and with 51g of 4831sc, I'm only getting around 2910 or so. I'd like to be up around 2950, but maybe I'm just extending my barrel life instead.....or maybe not.

Craiger, No, I havent tried any 4350. Right now Im having really good luck with the RE-22, 52.5 grains is shooting 2930fps and I shot that load at 265 yards and it shot really well. first time out at that distance I shot 3 groups and they were in this order, 1.1" .885" and then a .55". so, Im going to leave it there.

I could shoot them faster but, I think i may get a little longer barrel life at 2930.

Watch when you switch lots with Reloader 22. I had 3 lots and all three had to be signifacantly tweaked.

While cheaper the lot to lot difference made me switch to the move expensive VIN N560. I got some norma MRP...but not tested it as much.

Norma MRP, Reloader 22, and VIN N560 are almost...almost interchangeable with minor tweaking.

Now that Grafs has Norma MRP I maybe switching to it.

Also Russian Wolf primers or Winchester Large rifle gave be the best ES and SD.

Of course I am shooting out of a 6.5x55 Swede.

I really want to try those Wolf primers. So they are gretty good?

What about Vv N165, in the 6.5-284? Ive got that one on hand, Should I try that powder again? What do you think about it?
