Shot my .284 for the first time today. And have ???

I shoot 162 AMAX in my 284 with a .220" freebore, they work just fine. They will have more bullet in the case than the 180 hybrids.

I use N550 in mine.

Has anybody tried 4000-MR in their 284 with either 162 AMax, 175 SMK, or 180 Hybrid?

Just curious, the powder works well in my 243 wssm with 105 AMax's.

Jsimonh, your .030 groups look better to me than your .010 groups. Or am I missing something? Why aren't you trying .020 and .040 off the lands?
I ran QL for your load at .030 off and it came up with a reasonably mild load at 57,000 PSI and 2904 MV.
If you can get to 56.2 grains without pressure signs, I am interested in the accuracy and MV of that load. QL & OBT say 3004 MV, 63,652 PSI, and on a barrel node at 1.274mS.

The target below was shot from my .284 Shehane BAT with 180 Hybrids and H4831 SC. The first group was a clean barrel. I adjusted the Farley rest elevation knob after group 2 and did not tighten it, resulting in some bad vertical on group 3. This load is producing 2975 from a 32" Krieger with SD in the 3.4 to 6.4 range. Rifle and load performed well this week, winning the 29 Palms MCB LR Regional. The Hybrid was seated at 3.250, .015 off the lands.

Erik, will the 162gr Amax's be competitive at the longer distances? Is there a reason you shoot them over a heavier bullet like the 175smk or 180 bergers?

Nomad, Yes the .030 was the better groups. I haven't tried .020 and .040 because this load was literally a spur of the moment thing. I loaded and shot these groups in about an hour. Living in the country has some advantages! I think the one group in the .6's was probably more me than the load. I shoot prone with a rear bag and Harris bipod, sometimes it aint the best setup especially when the wind is blowing. And in Southwest Oklahoma it blows all the time!

Sleepygator, What was your charge weight? That's some good shooting.

Erik is probably still in the air or in transit, so I will take the liberty of answering for him. Erik traded in his .284 Shehane for two rifles, a 7mm SA magnum variant and a straight .284 Win. He shoots 180 Hybrids in the magnum and the lighter bullets in the .284. His .284 has a .220 freebore and .313 neck diameter. The only way I know this is that he borrowed my .284 Win reamer. ;) The 162 A-Max has a pretty good B.C. and, with light weight and short bearing surface, can be driven pretty fast. The recoil is noticeably less than the 180 bullets. The 162 could certainly be competitive at 1000 and a great 600 yard choice.

Our Forum Boss prefers that specific charge weights are not given, especially when it is a heavy charge. The rifle is a BAT 3LL147OCTPIC, no ejector, with a straight 1.25" Krieger barrel. It is specifically set up for shooting the heaviest charge possible.

Steve got it right. I shoot the AMAX because I don't have to do anything to them. I drive them at 3,000 fps. They are competitive for sure, I have shot some 197's at 1,000 with then and won the last club match at Bayou against bigger 7mm's shooting Hybrids.

Steve, you forgot the 6.5x47 Lapua, I still have that one! ;)

Not sure how I read right over the Sheshane in his post!

Thanks for all the great information.
I'll hopefully be shooting tomorrow and will have the chrono with me to see what the loads are doing.

2 groups with rl17 53.6 gr. 2930fps with sierra 180smk 28.5" saturn barrel on rem 700 action at 300 yds top group is 5 shots bottom 6 shots

I shot multiple test loads at 250 over a chrono on Tuesday with the Amax's. To my surprise the loads that produced the smallest 100 yard groups didn't do quite as well at 250. I've got more to test today and tomorrow, but as of right now it looks like the Hybrids is the bullet of choice for me. Its just more consistant overall in my rifle. I'll be testing at 100 yards today with 55.5gr 4831 and multiple seating depths.

Will update as I gather info.

I got to go shooting with Erik Cortina today. Shot my 284 Winchester for the first time. My shooting was lousy, but the company was great.
We shot at 200 yards and although I felt I had a bad shooting day, I had two groups at and under 3/4". So I think the 180 Hybrids will shoot well in my new build.

That aint to shaby Nomad!

I shot the 55.5gr loads today with really good results. The one that shot the best was .020 off the lands. I shot 2 shots into basically the same hole and my backstop gave way (railroad tie) so I shot the other 3 about a foot over at another target and the 3 shot group measured just over .2. The only bad thing is the bolt was pretty stiff to work after firing. I've already loaded some at 55gr to try tomorrow or Sunday. I've shot 55gr before with good ES, just not the best group (not to bad though), but they were loaded at .015 so hopefully the 55gr/.020 load will be the ticket.

I'm at .020 off with my loads. Velocities were all over the place - according to my chrony. Hopefully it just needs a good cleaning.

The chrony had an old weak battery in it. I should have figured that out right away, but after cleaning it produced no dirt, I thought to check the battery. Getting old, I guess.
Got to shoot my 284 for the second time while here in Port Lavaca, TX. The top two groups are RL-17 and 180 Berger Hybrids at 2804 & 2849 MV respectively. The bottom two are 4000-MR at 2740 & 2776. No pressure signs with any load and I think I can run the 4000-MR over 2800 fps. But if that single bullet hole in the first group is my fault (and I think it was), then I think I found my load. I will load it again as well as .2 grains up and down for confirmation.

That one group is outstanding. What type of barrel is on this "new build" rifle? If you don't me asking?

I'm putting a Krieger on the rifle I'm building right now, but have been thinking about a Saturn barrel because of the level of customization to groove size and twist rate that's available. Judging by grouzer3's groups at 300 yards, it looks like they'll shoot.
