Savage edge

Hey has anybody used one of these actions for a custom rifle? I really haven't ever seen one and the price is tempting for my next build but I don't want to get it and then find out it's a piece of junk. Whats the scoop on them? Also do they use the same barrels as Savage 12s?

I think they are a stripped down standard gun without the AccuTrigger, but if you're replacing it that would not matter. That said if I was going to use a Savage action for a custom built I would just buy the Savage Target Action, probably with the right bolt, and reduced size left port. These are single shot with a much more solid action, and three action screws.

I would totally agree if I were building a comp gun but I'm trying to build a Varmint rifle that I don't feel bad beating around in the truck. Times are tough around here unfortunately so I was hoping to find an action that was inexpensive but would make a sweet rifle.

Another possibility is the Mod. 11 action. That action comes with an Accu-trigger. I got mine from Northland Shooters Supply-I'm not associated with them. Jim is great to talk with and knows his stuff. Just a thought.

That might be the cheapest factory stock I've ever seen. That would go in the trash barrel faster than you could say "throw that away." Do these actions interchange with other Savage stocks? if not I just decided on a Stevens or SA Savage.

This article is hilarious. My new favorite gun writer quote ever, "It’s not the Accu-Trigger, but a much simpler and non-adjustable mechanism that, on my rifle, scaled 6 pounds 4 ounces and had unlimited creep. Pulling it was like hauling Rosie O’Donnell down a bad road." BAHAHAHA Anything with any resemblance to Rosie O'donnel has no place on any rifle of mine haha.

Just go with a Stevens action. Same solid action Savage has been using forever. The edge uses a recoil lug that sits in the stock, not a standard lug. The action would need to be machined to use a standard lug I believe. And I think the triggers are different as well, so the "standard" aftermarket options may not work. They don't have a tang either, so a stock swap would be questionable.

A very good trigger you can install in the Stevens yourself is the Rifle Basix SAV-2, adjustable from 5oz to 3lbs. Darn good trigger, I have two as well as a Timney.

Kenny.

The Stevens is the way to go.

You can pick up 200s for dirt cheap, pull the trigger off and use a RB or SSS unit.

Plenty of great barrels to thread on and stock are easy to find.

Best bang for the buck out there.

If thats what you decide to do I have a .243 headspace gauge and a barrel wrench you can borrow.

Cool. Great info guys, I believe I'll steer clear of that, sounds like a piece of junk. An old saying comes to mind... but I'll save that for a later day. I'll start looking for a Savage or a Stevens right away.

The Edge is a different action than the Model 10,12,110,112 etc. The parts are not interchangable. Like said above, use a Stevens 200 and you will end up with a nice gun. The Stevens action, bolt are the same as the Savage, just not usually finished as fancy.

Stay away from the Edge, now called the Axis.

I dont want to cause any hard feelings, or start a pee match, but I find it kind of comical that some give there advice that have never had any personal expierence with building a Edge/Axis. I would like someone here who has owned both guns and has had real life expierences with them to explain to me what makes the Steven's 200 a better gun, or would be a better option then the Edge/Axis? They both use the same exact barrel shank and thread diameter, and both have great aftermarket triggers aval for them from Rifle Basix....I think the safety is much nicer on the edge then the stevens. And what is so special about the stevens action/bolt vs the edge? ....My first build went easy peazy, and I ended up with a stellar gun that will keep up with the best of them, im currently having McGowen build another barrel for my second Edge project. Here is my first one completed: http://www.brtradingfort.com/apps/forums/topics/show/3961614-build-on-a-budget-

The fact that any savage short action stock works on the stevens and I can get a truly light trigger makes the stevens better for me. As a sporter with the factory stock I'm sure the axis is just fine. I like aftermarket options. JMO

This is a super article to read, it not only talks, but show pics of the differences bewteen the 200 and the Edge/Axis. I found it to be very informative before deciding on which to buy..I would say headhunter that the stock choice with the 200 is a clear advantage for those who do not like the factory edge stock. Im sure with time there will be aftermarket stocks aval for them. As far as the trigger, Rifle Basix makes the Sav-1 that fits the Edge/Axis, and its very good, with lots of adjustment that will fit the needs of most any shooter. Cheers, BR

Bought the Edge back in Nov. boy is it ugly , I almost took it back, but it was so cheap I kept it and worked on the trigger , witch is horrible, 259.00 on sale at Cabelas,I had a 25. 00 dollar off coupon, equals 234.00.. OK with me ! put a 4-12 on it and guess what, it dont shoot to bad! have only about 50 rounds so far, we will see., Camo the black plastic stock--- its lots better now, its a 243. the lug is built into the stock, this thing is different!!---Bought because it will be a cheap leave in the country rifle, and I have lots of brass and bullets for it....

Whoa whoa whoa... recoil lug slips into the action at the threads? seems a little sketchy... not a fan of milling away material at the chamber. Could be fine.... seems like a bad idea... but who am I to say. Again, looks like a decent action, but I think I'll stick with the Stevens. They sold me on the after market parts availabilty line.
