Savage actions

I not familiar with the Savage actions and or barrels. I see ads for barrels that say "Small Shank". can someone please explain what is small shank and what actions do they fit?
and if I were to pick up a Savage action (other than a new one) for a build, which one would be good?

If I were going to do a build from scratch and did not need/want a single shot I would start with a Stevens action and replace the trigger with a SSS trigger.
