savage build help

looking into building a savage 110 in 243win to shoot at the local 100and 200 yard matches. need some help with deciding what barrel , trigger and stock to go on it with out breaking the bank. i really prefer real wood stocks but also might not be feasibly. stock must be under 2.5 in and not flat. thanks for the help. Adam

I have built over 20 customs on Savages. I currently own 7, all tack drivers. I would use a Sharpshooter Trigger, I like them much better than Rifle BAsix, have both. I have had great luck with the Shilen and Krieger CBI button rifled barrels, don't break the bank and available from Northland shooters supply, keeps several in stock. Bot of my CBI barrels shoot in the high 2's to low 3's, depending on me. One is a 6xc, 8 twist and the other is a 6.5x55 swede, 8 twist. I like the factory BVSS laminate stock, but also have several Bell/Carlson tactical, looks just like a Mc Millan A5, has 1" thick alum skeleton throught the stock, $225 or so if you look around. I just skim bed and drop in. I would also get a 1/4" surface ground recoil lug, and indicate and true the action face off. I have a mandrel for this, screws into the barrel threads, passes thru the reiver and into the jaws of lathe chuck and into the live center in other end of lathe. Holler back if I can help any more.

Bobby Hart laminates from Stockys

I have 6 savage builds now 3 are 6br. If you want to be competitive at the club level at 100-200 yards. I would really think about it before I went 243 jmo

I would definitely go with a 6br or 6xc, the more I shoot these two cartridges, the more they impress me, especially the xc.

no 243 , 6br or 30br if shooting for score definitely 30 br, I have one for sale you can not build for the price I'm asking. Savage Target action trued and built by Lester Bruno, Krieger barrel 1/17 twist, Mcmillan stock, rifle basic trigger set at 1.5 ounce, go to where it's listed under actions and guns for sale. this gun has 500 rounds on it thats it , they say a 30BR will go 6000 rounds so has plenty of life, I have two and I only need one.

Before you do anything find a gunsmith who works on Savages and knows the ins and outs of the shooting discipline you want to shoot in. You might want to talk with some of the winning shooters who are shooting Savages in the discipline that you want to shoot in.

Internet chatter sometimes is good and sometimes is not so good. Work with a reputable Smith. Get gun smith references from shooters in the discipline you plan to shoot in. Check the smith out with the local Better Business Bureau.

There are advantages with certain calibers, cartridges, barrels, stocks, triggers, etc.

Do your homework if you want to be competitive and satisfied with your gun.

How much are you asking for a .30 Br?

Try URBANRIFLEMAN he make very accurate barrels. He made one for my RPR in 6 bra shoot great. Perk

I'd suggest a 6BR for competition. And a Sharp Shooter Supply laminated Varmint stock if flat bottom is out. 1-10 twist for 80 to 95 grain bullets, or 1-13 for under 70 grain. My Axis uses a Sharp Shooter trigger, if you can find one. The 243 is a good choice for longer range Varmint, but the 6BR is my choice for target use, easily under .250" moa!

Mine aren't zombies, out of 21 shooters in August, with 20 of them shooting custom actions and most with Custom fiberglass and carbon built stocks, built around the 17# light gun maximum for 600 yard IBS group and score competition.

My 8 twist Krieger on a Savage Axis action, in a Sharp Shooter BR laminated stock built around 14#, took high score, using those 95 grain Bibs bullets mentioned in the 9 year old thread others above responded to. It has been updated with the 15'55 NF Competion.

The point being Savage is still a great option for competition, and info on what is currently working today is still welcomed by anyone using one that works in today's competition, regardless of the class one is looking to build it for.

Mine are both far from zombies, and get plenty of attention when others see them at the matches realize, they shouldn't be overlooked.

Making this a current thread with up to date info when shooters like the last 7 come here to add, knowing many more than that have opened it to see what others are currently using!

Only a zombie thread if your not wanting current information aperantly?

I just started getting into putting together Savage rifles for hobby shooting. Really enjoy the assembly and load development and so far I have been fortunate enough to build some fairly accurate rifles. Glad to see the the thread resurrected and hopefully continue to discuss the Savage

Sounds like you shoot what you got? Good job!!:cool:
Love it when a POS Savage can beat the pants of a "custom" build. :D:D
Even if it was a 2013 thread.;)
I shoot with what works, I don't care if it's a Bat, a Stolle, Stiller, Remington, etc etc, they can all be POS! As you gain experiance you to will realize that!

I shoot what works! But I have built enough rifles and competed against everything to understand what makes most of them shoot like a POS, is the Indian pulling the trigger!

I have a Bat on a Scovile in a 6ppc with 3 Krieger barrels, that will get everyone's attention on a 100 to 300 yard match, but it takes a back seat to that Savage at 600 yards.

90% of success is learning how to feed any rifle what it likes best. Once you use a quality barrel, and competent gun smith, the best shooter winning any match can probably win with any rifle there!

The one pulling the trigger usually determines a POS from a RQS!
