7mm Savage Build Question

So I'm about to start my 2nd Savage build and my first one has made me fall in love with the 7mm-08. For my 2nd build I ended up with a long action receiver so I'm having trouble deciding what 7mm to build. I know I can do another 7mm-08 however I'm interested in other 7mm choices. The primary purpose of the rifle will be long range shooting (500+ yards) My primary question is what is the largest 7mm cartridge I can safely build on the savage 110 receiver? My second question is without submitting myself to much recoil punishment what is "the best" (I know loaded question) 7mm for long range?

Any help, input, or resources, would be appreciated.

I've actually looked at the 284 pretty close but I'm just not seeing that much of ballistic advantage over the 7mm-08. Also I'm really looking for a long action option and I'm not currently loading my own ammo so I'd want something readily available from a factory load. As far as use, it would primarily be punching paper and the occasional New Mexico elk hunt.

Anybody know where I could find an answer to question 1... what the largest 7mm I could build on the 110 receiver?

Thanks for the feedback.

7mm Magnum. Easy to find factory ammo.

Either 284win or 280ai would be my choice. What kind of performance do you get with your 7-08? If you shoot the heavies out of both I think you will see a decent increase in velocity with the 284. I must say ive never dealt with a 7-08 so im just going off what I have read and seen for load data there.

Hell maybe a 7-08ai would be of interest considering your love for your 7-08 already. You cant really go wrong with anything thats been listed so far. If you were going for pure speed the 7-300, 7rum, 7lrm would be on my short list.

Keep us posted. Would like to hear what direction you go!

Ask bootsmcguire or hotolds422 at Savageshooters.com. They are a good source of Savage info along with a number of others on the sight. Depending on how its done, I don't believe strength will be an issue, cartridge fit will be in some configurations.

For low recoil...take at look at this. This is a switch barrel I am doing, the sporter is shown, I have a Criterion 26" heavy magnum contour coming that I plan to get to 1500 yds or more. The rifle in the pics will go to 800-1000 no problem. I load my own so I have an advantage there over factory when making up long range rounds.

As always..have fun.
