Savage bolt heads

Who installs savage bolt heads on Remington bolts? Also where can I get savage bolt heads complete ready to be installed?
Thank you,
Brush

Savage bolt heads can be had from Sharp Shooter Supply. Savage is their "thing"! Don't know who does the Remington install. Someone else will chime in for sure. HTH. Mike.

I got a picture of one which I took off a forum somewhere, but darned if I can remember where. I'll keep thinking on it.

I think some one on Saubier.com has the gun or knows who has it. This comes up all the time next time I find it I'll keep the info for times like this. Art

PokerPayer, who is your gunsmith? I'm interested in the Rem. bolt with savage conversion.

,just notes the dates they were posed)

hopes someone checks him out and reports back.

the advantage for the remington action....you would be able to switch bolt heads to accommodate any of case head sizes ....IE...17 rem/223 base to a med size head 6mmbr/308 to a mag size....you add that with a switch barrel setup and your about ready for anything.

ok hear goes now.....this is MY own oppion.....if someone could make a 2oz trigger to go into the savage action i could be perswaded to go that way......i like the way you can switch barrels and bolth heads on a savage rifles...... but i like 2oz triggers in my rifles and already haveing remington rifles that take 2oz trigger......welllll a switch bolt and barrel would be nice

"I've done several of the Rem/Sav conversions with the bolt head and barrel nut.... It seems to benefit the Remingtons in the way of accuracy. I would guess it has to do with the barrel nut. The fly in the ointment.....Remington uses a taper toward the end of their firing pin and Savage's is straight, Leaving you with the choice of turning down a Rem firing pin to fit into a Savage bolt head... or reaming the inside of a Savage bolt head to accept the Rem pin. I had a reamer made up at PTG to do just that but realized that when the pin is in the fired position the taper locks the bolt head, negating the " Floating Bolt Head",bunch of BS if you give it any real thought) design that Savage built into their bolt.
The other problem is the amount of shank that needs to be removed from the bolt head and the proximity of the hole for the cross pin to the impact point of the firing pin. In order for it to function reliably it takes a Wolff,Blitzschnell striker spring,Brownells) with a 28 or 32 lb. rating. I'm not entirely sure the end of the bolt head shank wont eventually crack through to the cross pin hole with enough use.
I dont see turning the taper out of the Rem firing pin making it anything but weaker. It can be done, but I dont know how reliable it will stay for how long. Your milage may vary...

Sounds like a lot simpler just to use a Savage action.

Rifle Basix SAV-2 trigger goes to 3-/4-oz. for less than $150.

I've been arguing with my friend over this post since I left it. He contends that the proximity of the firing pin contact point to the cross pin hole is a non issue by virtue of the primer cushioning the strike against the back of the bolt head shank. I've got an XP coming that I was going to convert for myself....I'll be trying turning down the taper on the firing pin to fit the Sav bolt shank..I'll keep y'all posted as to the viability of going that direction.

I will be looking forward on hearing what you do and how you do it and how it works out....not sure if anyone else cares...but it sounds intresting to me atleast:D

thanks
JohnJ

Getting toward the end....

Fred at SSS trues the ones he sells. The rumor has been around for a long time that Jewell is working on a trigger for the Savage. I called them to verify . The gentleman told me that parts are out for bid and hopefully they will be selling triggers by years end. Working with prototype on springs, etc and not sure of final weight. Maybe 4-6oz or maybe less? JimDee
PS: didn't talk to Arnold, just some guy that answered the phone. But it keeps the rumor alive.
