savage barrels?

i have been reading some of these posts,and i get the impression that you can switch barrels on a savage very e-z like. lets say from a .243 to a .308, using the same bolt,etc. just un-screw the nut, and switch. am i rite?

That's right. They are great for switching barrels.I have switched many a barrel and once you have a couple things like a barrel vise, and a nut wrench, and preferably, the proper head space gauges, you'll be caught up and hooked on buying pre-fit barrels from custom barrel makers and trading and buying barrels from fellow switch barrelers. Be careful though, it is addictive.

There is a great website, savageshooters.com that has loads and loads of info on how to safely switch barrels and the different savage actions, large shank and small shank, and anything you would want to know.

In a relative sort of way, yeah they are easy to switch. The tools you need are fairly inexpensive...a Savage barrel nut wrench and some way to hold the action,I just went ahead and bought a Wheeler action wrench. You've got the right idea- you can switch barrels amongst cartridges of similar case head size and length. Dis-similar case head sizes can still be done with a bolt head change. However short mags and some target actions as well as some standard mags after a certain date of mfg. will have a larger barrel shank and will not interchange with 'small shank' Savages.
You will need to learn how to set the headspace on the cartridge/barrel you are switching to. Not difficult, but really important. A 'go-guage' for your new cartridge is the easiest and most reliable.
Oh, yeah. The facory has an 800# gorilla with an attitude and a chimp with a 5 gallon pail of stickum that installs the factory barrels. Once you get the factory barrel off and cleaned up the first time, then it's easy. No need to go find the gorilla or chimp for the re-install.:thumb:

No you don't have to have lube BUT I use nickel anti-seize as I know I'm changing barrels at some point.

Small dab of lithium grease will go a long way.

You can also do the same, now with many other rifle brand actions. Companies are coming out often, with Pre-fits for other brands.
Just do some goggling and you will see.

I've always used a dab of lithium. In a pinch I've used "STP" !!
Still have a can of Andy Granatelli's original secret sauce on the
shelf.

Aaron, I think you always give good advice. I will have to look for that, where do you buy it? Most of my gun grease is ooooold. One of my ancester probably bought most of it at John Brownings last garage sale. Sometimes you just need to update.

I've changed many barrels on my Savage model 12 and 110s.. Understand if yours is a small or large shank, buy a barrel-nut wrench, and always buy a headspace gage with the barrel; factory cartridges vary too much for my taste to trust them.. I prefer to use a no-go gage.
