Savage barrel vise

what is your budget? Whatever it may be take it, add somemore $ and buy a good one that will hold tight and last a lifetime.

You don't need a barrel vice with savage. Action wrench is the proper tool to have. Remington 700 rifle action wrench and head is the proper way to tighten or loosen the nut.
Brownells part no 080 800 700wb.works with some modification you will need the second head for the target action. It will need to be modified for the lug and bore size. You are tightening the nut to the action. So you must hold the action not the barrel. Larry

Been using a barrel vise and barrel nut wrench here for years... I have an action wrench for the few barrels I have that have shoulders. Thats about the only time I use it.

YMMV,

Monte

Ok when just using the action wrench like in a vise to set up head space, when you tighten the nut does the barrel move ?

I don't understand this.

When cranking down on the nut to get it tight will the barrel turn in the direction your turning the nut, or will it not move?

OK, understand the question now.

I don't know, since I always use a dogwood barrel vise.

This has got me thinking about a wooden action vise. Savage action is 1.380, so a 1 3/8" Forstner bit would be just about perfect.

The action wrench hold the lug also and uses the front hole in the action. Savage has a Gorilla that tightens the barrels. without a action wrench some are almost impossible to loosen.
A barrel should not turn when installing if the threads are clean and lubed. I use both.
When you tighten with a nut you add head space. With a shoulder you decrease head space.
Small shank savage action the standard 1.250 barrels you have plenty of shoulder. Target or large action receivers I use a larger Diameter lug and nut. Larry

With a shoulder you decrease head space? I don't understand this? I understand the nut increases head space.do you mean turn the action to get it tight?

Ok, got it.im not really worried on getting barrel off, just needed to know if I needed a barrel vise.
Also this is a stagger feed action, wheeler action wrench, I understand this one won't work with the center feed actions?

the action wrench Jim Briggs sells at Northland Shooting Supplies is the best one I've found. And its made in USA.
