savage barrel rechamber

savage 6mmbr prefit barrel from shilen 272 neck 28" long 1-8 twist

barrel is shooting very well. average is just shy of .250 at 100 yards for 5 shot groups bi pod and bag.

the issue is i have 1700 rounds through the barrel and the question is how to proceed when it is done and accuracy degrades.
- do i get it set back and go 6br again or go with an improved case?
- do i switch to 243?
-who can i get to do the work and what should i expect to pay?

You could just run a 6-284 reamer in it and you wouldn`t have to set it back.

If 6 br is shooting that good from a prefit,retire the barrel and get another barrel from northland shooters supply. A rechamber will cost half or better the price of a new one.

matthias: Barrel shank diameter will also be a concern, depending on how far the barrel must be setback to cut a new chamber, whatever cartridge.

I setback a Savage (mdl 12BVSS factory chambered in 243) barrel to 6BR and came very close to running out of enough barrel diameter to take the threads for the barrel nut. It just barely made it.

One of the reasons I prefer the Remington "nutless" design with the full 1.250" shank diameter. Also allows me to use a heavier contour, straight taper.

good point with the barrel threads. i was thinking about taking advise on using a larger case like the 6x47, 6x284, 243 ai etc. that would alleviate the need to set it back. i may also have it salt bath nitrided to extend barrel life as an experiment with a barrel that would otherwise be retired. waiting on some answers to make a decision.

To bad your not closer to me, I have a 6-284 reamer and if you want to go clear crazy I have a reamer for 6mm on the 300 WSM case.
