Savage Barrel Nut or Not

Jard also makes an after market trigger for the Savage action. I get mine to 6 ounces without any modification.

I have a PTA with a heavy varmint barrel. It has a step down similar to the one pictured earlier. My question is, what did you do for a wrench? I ground one down to fit over the 1.250 shank. Is there a better option?

Larger wrench with brass rods in the nut . If you have a smooth nut made 1.310 made you can drill the hole for a spanner wrench . Where everything is in the stock . Larry

My last three I've done I castrated and the one I have with nut heck it's only torqued to a smack with a 3# dead blow hammer and hasn't came loose in over 6 years of 308 not a lot of rounds down the tube but I'll guess 1200 or so.

I really don't think it matters but barrel contour was my deciding factor as I like the medium palma and heavy palma barrels, my 308 was a McGowen 7-DS blank if I recall which is for the most part a little heavier version of the Savage varmint barrel.

I guess if you want to be able to change them in the garage go with a nut, if you have a lathe or know some one that can do the work castrate the thing just have to open the stock up some but like I said either way you'll be fine as I doubt one is more accurate than the other. Later,

I can see the benefits of the nut when buying pre-chambered barrels. I currently have a shillen 6br that shoots great for F class. It was a cheaper option than custom chambering by a gunsmith. However if I were to have a gunsmith chamber a blank, it seems no nut would be the way to go. The headspace would be set and you can screw it on/off at will. I think the no nut option would be a good way to go for a switch barrel gun. The shoulder positions the barrel the same every time. If having a smith chamber a blank, the only real advantage (unless you plan to use the barrel on multiple actions) I see is you dont have to send your action to the smith.

I like them so much I put them on my Rem 700s, I have 5 or 6 that I swap barrels all the time from 223 through 500 RUMs.

Er . . . yes. Yes I can. You can believe me or you can call me a liar (I consider gross exaggeration a lie).

The best part (or, worst from MY point of view, because it reflects on my ability) is that it has shot a 5 shot, 0.280 in group, at 100 yards! I have the target to prove it. Alas, I was not the shooter. The guy I bought it from was.

Well, maybe he lied. I think not, but you are entirely free to make your own call and I strongly support your right to say so.

I myself have shot numerous 5 shot groups at roughly 0.5 in. with some near 0.4 in. at 100 yards. But I strongly support your right to call me a liar if you are so inclined.

The load "Dave" (of 0.28 in) used was:

53 grain Hornady flat base, moly coated (unfortunately, no longer listed)
Win brass
CCI Primer
33 grains H4895
COL 2.420

Oh . . . and he used a . . . in his words . . . "good cheap scope" . . . a Tasco, which came with the rifle. (I think so highly of this ugly duckling rifle, for which I paid $400 for w/scope, dies and 200 rounds of ammo) that I've put a $2000+ Nightforce 5.5-22 NXS on it. But maybe I can't prove that, either.)

FWIW. He bought the rifle from someone in Alaska. He thought it had not been shot though it had, apparently, been stored in a place where it had been exposed to water (there were rust spots on the barrel).

He shot 0.5 groups, but noticed that the barrel's crown could be improved. He took it to his smith and asked that he re-crown the barrel. The smith thought he was nuts because . . . who wouldn't be happy with 0.5??

But the smith recrowned the barrel and the rest is history.

Numerous Savage small shank nutted rifles with aftermarket barrels. Fantastic shooters and currently building a 6BR Norma Remage with a CBI.
Never heard of the nuts coming loose especially if you use a torque wrench and set to recommended torque.

Aesthetics, could care less about looks. I care about how the rifles shoot.

Looking good and being good can be one and the same.

You guys want an awesomeclooking but that will thread a 20tpi barrel, check out the new nuts that bighorn arms is coming out with. I'm on the list for the 12 point. They're awesome looking, very functional. I believe the goal is to tighten proportionally all the way around the nut so there isn't any binding, I'm just guessing though.

If you want to use prefit barrels, go with a nut. Else, not.

Here's my PacNut from PacNor. I don't think it looks bad at all, and the threads and fit to my action is absolutely beautiful. I'll do this again the next time I get a custom barrel. jd

Is pac nor the only barrel mfg'r using a long gracefully tapered nut like this one?
