Savage Barrel Nut or Not

On a recent rebarrel where I supplied the blank & reamer, the gunsmith (new to me) surprised me a bit by doing a partial relief around the nut. I've seen ones where someone left shank full diameter and then relieved around the nut. Didn't care for that, but I kinda like this one...

The advantages of the nut is what attracted me to savage. I like the nut.

Damn shame trigger options are so bad though.

I have one of the same. The relief foward of the nut is the diameter That the barrel is threaded off of . You show the nut is still smaller then the barrel lug .
If the barrel wasn't with a nut You can see all the shoulder that would be holding the lug if it was nut less . Larry

that does look alot better than a savage nut imo. those pacnor nuts are kind of expensive though arent they?

The advantages of the nut is what attracted me to savage. I like the nut.

Damn shame trigger options are so bad though.

the nut is what attracted me to the savage also. the trigger and other things are what drove me away from them. with the advent of the remage why put up with the savage trigger system. You can have a nut job with a jewel. Now that i have a lathe i wont be taking a chance on drop in barrels anymore and i can use any trigger i want.

I think the Remage thread option, including the nut cost sixty bucks more on the price of the barrel. jd

One of my very favorite rifles is a butt-ugly Post-64 Model 70 chambered for .225 Win. It has rust spots on the barrel, pressed checkering, an ill-fitting recoil pad, and 1:14 twist. But it's so accurate (capable of .3 accuracy or better in a competent shooter's hands) I wouldn't trade it for any other rifle.

Sitting on top of its replacement. After probably 50 or so barrel changes, the last factory barrel removal was just too much for it and it started cracking.

Can you prove the .3 accuracy? I also have the same rifle.

I found local guy that modifies the Rifle Basix and it's as nice as any high end trigger I've shot.

i had Fred at SSS install his benchrest trigger. it is quite nice.

My gunsmith told me that I could not use the nut because the barrel blank was too big in diameter at the shank. He would have to taper the barrel down about 16 inches to get the contour right. Evidently without a step. I noticed in one picture on this thread that it looks as though the same thing was encountered by someone else. His rifle was returned to him with a step in front of the nut. Thoughts?

The step foward of the nut is the amount of barrel diameter that would be the holding the lug on the barrels without the nut . Standard 1.250 barrels when being installed on large shank savage are turned for threading to approx 1 120 . So the shoulder total is approx .130 Useing a nut you add approx another .100 to the total . Larry

We have several custom Rem700s in the safe with Jewell triggers and the works, but folks are usually arguing over who gets to shoot the Savages, which all still have the nuts.

Beauty is as beauty does, and the Savages have simply won many more matches, including four 200s with high x counts.

I have Savage's with the nuts so I can rebarrel at will. I have a couple SAV2 triggers and a couple of LRPV and a couple of the SSS drop in triggers. I still wish I could have a Jewell trigger. After my dealings with SSS, I will NEVER EVER buy anything from them EVER AGAIN, let alone send them a rifle. NEVER EVER. I got the SAV2 trigger to about 5 oz. safely.
