Savage AXIS ?

Is the Savage Axis the same thing as the old Rem. 78's. By the same I mean is the action used for the AXis the same as the Savage rifles; ie 10/110, 12 , ect.??

What did they do to cheapen it up ?
I think it is probably as strong or stronger than the 10-110 actions because less material has been cut out. Major difference is the recoil lug. It's in the stock and not attached to the action. You can have the action turned down and put a regular recoil lug on if desired. Trigger is terrible but what do you expect on a $300 gun. Action is very smooth, mine is probably smoother than most of the model 10s, 12s, and 110s I have.

THANK YOU, I wonder how the "no recoil lug" will work ?? in after market stocks ? ,did Savage use the same threads on the BBl/action as they do on the 10/110 ?

I can't comment on the mechanics of an axis but, I put a rifle basix in the grandkids and it shot honest 1 " groups

I know Boyd's makes a stock for the axis but other than that I don't know. The barrel is the same threads as the other small shank savage models.

The recoil lug on the Axis is a small insert that is sits in the stock and mates with a cut out on the bottom of the receiver. When you purchase a Boyds they will have that recoil lug already in place so you can just drop in your barreled action.

You won't find a lot of love for the Axis but I have a few and out of the box with good factory ammo they will shoot 1-1.5 MOA. If you decide that you want to get into modifications such as the trigger job, stiffening the stock, maybe an aftermarket barrel and throw in some good load development it wouldn't surprise me if you got into sub-moa with a majority of your groups.

Ok this is something I know a little about.
The bolt is pretty much exactly the same as any other long action savage. All of it is interchangeable with other long action savages. Bolt heads and handles are interchangeable as are the bodies.
Scope mount is proprietary though. But they are cheep at $40ea on Midway
Recoil lug, well you can just buy a regular one and put it in between the receiver and nut like any other savage. Some people put the action in a lathe and cut down the face so they don't loose any threading on the barrel.
Botom metal I am not yet sure on. I think that a long action with screw spacing of 4.4in will work. It measures the same with my calipers and bottom feed looks similar. I intend to try this out eventually.
The receiver as stated above is stiffer as there is a lot less metal removed. Its about as stiff as any target savage only without the tang.
Bedding surface is rather small. You can only bed the forward half.

Below are photos of mine in 6.5x47. For a $250 gun with a $250 barrel on it shoots amazing. .25moa easy. My first group I ever shot with it was .236in!

Savage bolts handles are NOT interchangeable with axis . Yes they fit but you will not have primary extraction ! It is very important to understand how that works . The only thing that interchanges on the Axis bolt is the bolt head and retain pin .
Axis rifles without the accu trig can be retrofitted . They ( accu triggers ) usually sell for $35 -$45 . Depending on the color of the safety blade .
The axis is a solid easily modified starter rifle . Just be careful of some of the miss information out there . There's a good you tube called something like SavaxisMac

Is that a factory barrel? On the Savage website, I couldn't find this or any factory savage rifle in 6.5x47.

Ok, So it's not actually a factory rifle but a rebarreled one and not exactly an endorsement of the Axis.

What do you mean endorsment? Savages are like legos. You just buy the parts you want and put it together. Just like any AR-15

If it has an aftermarket barrel, it is NOT a $250 Savage Axis factory rifle that shoots 1/4 moa. It's a custom build.

$250 is the money i put into the gun. Everything else was taken from other guns I already had.

I dont consider it a custom build because nothing has been permanently modified. This rifle can go back to the factory look at any moment.
If you put a flashlight on your AR15 do you call it a custom rifle? If you cange the barrel on an AR its still not a custome rifle either. Only when you start drilling or cutting with a lathe is it custom.

The Sav axis is a good beginner platform to experiment with . They are not without faults . The better choice , as far as rigidity , squareness , or I dare say trueness , is the Remington 783 . It has an articulated bolt head , takes Savage small thread barrels , has an improved style of savages accu trigger and a third safety lug ( bolt handle ) . All for $260 then you get a $40 rebate , so at $220 it's a sound , better designed rifle . Just my opinion . I do a lot of barrel work and have been impressed with these . I do have 8 custom Axis rifles and 6 110 savages and would have preferred the remington 783 .

Exactly......"Factory" means just that.....no aftermarket barrels....only barrels as they come out of the "factory". Can you imagine the repercussions if a manufacturer got caught installing non-factory barrels on sponsored shooting teams? Let's not even think they would ever become that desperate.

Lol ya that would be funny.
For the record it is a 250$ barrel and the gun is about 250 in most of my local shops.
