Savage axis help

Looking to tune up the primary extraction on 2 Savage axis rifles. Very familiar with how to do this on the 110 series but cant seem to crack this one. I don't want to send them out to a Smith so any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

How do you mean " primary extraction"?

I haven't looked at the difference between the extractors between Axis & 110.

What, if any, is the difference between the extractors. If you want a kit to give it a little more holding, Gun Shack and others have a spring/ball bearing kit that will improve the holding power.

The extractor is fine. Primary extraction is the bolts last bit of rotation during unlocking moves the bolt back slightly to help break the brass case free from the chamber. The axis has the PE cam built into the bolt handle

There is one guy around that does bolt work on the axis.
I know he does the bolt lift kits, plus he does other work.

Did you change the bolt handle on it ? Axis rifles are different than other savage rifles , in the beginning, lots of guys were using 110/10 bolt handles and no primary extraction .
If you can , take a pic of the rear action with the bolt partially open .

Only possible fix , besides swaping parts , is to shorten the bolt body . With the bolt in the receiver , you can measure with feeler gauges, the distance needed . It’s usually only .010 or less . Cheaper alternative is to find a friend with an axis and try his bolt handle . I have a half dozen or more ,I use to get manufacturing tolerance stacking eliminated .

The bolt doesnt like being welded . At least the couple I tried . With the voids I found in them I think they are cast .

Just a thought. Have you lapped your lugs , if so how much ? Is it the original bolt head ?
If you remove yor action from the stock, insert bolt and close while cocked , invert and use a feeler gauge between the bolt handle and receiver. Then do the same with the firing pin innthe fired position . Take measurements as before .
Did you adjust the firing pin depth ?

One is a complete rifle and the other is just a stripped action, the rifle was blueprinted and firing pin depth isnt adjustable
