Savage actions and a custom build

I still havent found a solid ballistics chart for 260 AI. i would love to see the comparissons with the 260AI and 6.5x284.

I don't think a chart's necessary. All you need to do is use one of the online ballistics programs or Sierra's program and punch in the parameters. A 140 VLD at 2950 will do the same thing no matter what cartridge launched it as far as ballistics go.

good point. Ive never tried any of the electronic programs.

Ok i just downloaded point blank, im just going to have to figure it out.

They're a must-have, at least for me. I won't even buy a bullet without running its numbers through Sierra I6. Sierra's program has many bullets and their numbers in it already but still allows custom bullets you can edit into it (diameter, weight, BC & default velocity) - you just have to get the BC number from the manufacturer.

Having a program of some sort is essential for me though. It's nice having hard facts with minimal variables and knowing if one bullet versus another is really a better performer or not. It's really interesting to see where performance lines start crossing with changing velocities, bullet weights and BC. It also makes it nice to be able to go out to the longer line with a 100-yard zero and know what your come-up SHOULD be. You'll at least hit paper that way.

Ive been messing around with it for a little while now and i can see how it would be that usefull. My only problem is that i dont have any "for sure" velocities, just what i find on the internet.

Rock Knocker, Oehler may have a 35P. They recently made another run of them because of demand. Check and see. The 35P is worth the money if you can find one. Even though they were out of production for several years, Oehler always serviced them. Shoot, they still support the Oehler 33. Great people to deal with.

Good luck, Tom

It would be nice to have but im too new into reloading to justify spending the money on one.

Hmm, it's kind of important to know what your stuff's doing. If you have to you might have to get a cheaper one and get it from Cabela's when they're running one of those spend $100 get $20 off type of deals, I know they're running one now until 1/10/11 but you have to have one of those mailers to use it.

I've just got a cheap Chrony Beta Master and it works, although finicky at times. Hell, I even shot it by accident and it still works.

I will be looking into them. For now i want to do things the hard way, i am getting better than .5 moa groups, so i know my gun and ammo is accurate everything else is up to me and if i can learn how to do it without all the bells and whistels it will make me that much better once i get all the gadges. Hell i could be shooting my 223 at less than 2500 fps but the groups are good.

Until you have a chrony, you really have no idea what your loads are doing or how your ES/SD is, and those alone can tell you a lot about any issues you may have with your reloading technique.

Not to mention that if you plan to shoot long, knowing what your ammo is doing is absolutely essential. I wouldn't even consider trying to develop 600yd accuracy without a chrony, just too many unknowns that will have you chasing your tail for weeks. I find it very useful for even 300yds. Really helps tune your ammo beyond what you can without it.

Once you have a truly accurate rifle in a round like the 6.5X284 or .260AI, you need to know what that bullet is doing to be able to be accurate at 600yds. If your just guessing, your going to waste a lot of ammo.

Anyway, what's a $100 Chrony anyway? A couple boxes of bullets? You will waste that many or more bullets just to get it tuned and figure out what's up at 600yds without a chrono. They are a real time, money and aggravation saver when you want to go long. Not something you should be without if you want to shoot much past 300yds. Not to mention you will be putting a lot of miles on that expensive barrel trying to figure out where you are, and they don't last forever by a long shot.

With a rifle like you want to build, a chrony is a necessity. Do yourself the favor and buy that before the rifle. You will be very glad you did.

Ive been looking around finding information on these criterion barrels. It seems they share the same factory that Krieger uses. One uses the botton rifleing process and one the cuting process. i belive kreiger is the botton rifling right? Also Krieger barrels have been cryognically treated criterion have not and krieger barrels are finnished my a multiple lapping process and criterions have been honed.

His price for the criterion barrel that he recomended was $290 (forgot to ask if it was chambered yet) Its a great price but how with it compare to an actual krieger, or shillen that he also has in stock? Ive also heard good things about Brux... Im quite the noob with all of this especially barrels there are so many different ways to go and the only non factory barrel i have is an ER shaw that came with my ar15.

And Kenny what you said makes sence.

Ok forget what i said before i see that criterion is the botton rifleing devision.

Criterion is Krieger's button rifling division. And if Kreiger is putting the same kind of care into them as their cut rifled stuff, they should be a very good barrel. Krieger uses a cryogenic process and Criterion does not.

Shilen uses the button rifling technique as well, so they are made by essentially the same process. Shilen also makes a very good product. Probably one of the best button rifled barrels made.

I believe the $290 price tag is pre-chambered as well.

Criterion also makes the barrels used on most Weatherby rifles as well. They might even make all of them now, as I am not 100% sure of that.

I wouldn't worry a bit about a Criterion barrel. Krieger makes one of the best barrels in the industry, and I doubt they want to ruin their name with a poor product.

That is quite a deal on a barrel ready to put on and shoot, i would have to be pretty lucky for him to have one in stock already chambered to 260AI but he seems to like the cartridge so maybe i will be lucky.

What's no to like about a 6.5mm cartridge! It is a very accurate round without a lot of recoil so its much more fun to shoot for extended times and barrel lifespan is better than the 6.5-284 for example. It is a solid choice.

Jim Briggs has a .260AI listed in a 26" stainless varmint contour.

It also states the price for 26" barrels to be $250.

Man that is a smoking deal!

Actually, you might want to be quick on buying that, or it might just end up in Maine! ;D

Kenny

Oh, I forgot you had decided to go the target action route. I keep thinking you want a repeater for some reason. Anyway, I have a 6.5mm barrel sitting in my basement already, I was just jokin around. ;)

Really good deal though. And 28" will be better for a hot round anyway.

Kenny

I do want a repeater, i just dont think i need one and in the long run i would rather have the accuracy. i just cant find out how much of a difference in accuracy i would have between maybe the model 116 stainless repeater action he has on stock or the target action hes got.

Btw where did you find what hes got in stock and prices? i havent found any site for him just a phone number and what hes said in our conversation, were going to meet up hopefully on sunday night.
