Savage actions and a custom build

Im looking to build a custom rifle off of a savage action. First of all im looking for accuracy and this will realistically be a target rifle, with the chance of someday getting some antelope or long horn. Its most likely going to be a 6.5x284 with a kreiger barrel.

My biggest question is with the different savage actions, ive been looking at the model 10, model 12 and the target actions. I would like it to have a magazine for a couple extra shots at least and the target action cant deliver that from what ive seen. So whats going to be best models 10 or 12?

I would like to stick with the accu trigger, and i was also looking into some good stocks for a rifle like this, even though it will be a target rifle i want it to have more of a tactical twang to it because i would like a sythetic stock that i could camo up and not have any sort of bright shiney bits to it. I wouldnt mind even having a savage accu stock but i havent found anywhere that sells the stocks by themselves.

Anyways this will be my first build so i was just lookin for some advise on custom savages. Thanks

Neither the 10 or 12 is what your looking for.
For the 6.5x284 with a mag you need a long action.
The three digit series is what you need to look at 110-112 etc.

Take away the trigger and different bolt handles the actions are the same. Choose CM or SS whatever you prefer. If possible find one with the bolt face you need. If not you can swap those easily with parts from Midway etc.

Joe is right, you need a long action. And if you don't want an accu-trigger, a Stevens is a cheap way to get a donor action for a repeater, as they are a pre-accu-trigger Savage.

If you only want an action, the Stevens is a great way to go.

I also don't see the varmint and sporter options for actions on the Savage site, anyone know what happened there? They only list the target action now?

For an accu-stock, check with Jim Briggs of Northland Shooter Supply, he sells actions, stocks, barrels, basically the works for Savage rifles. He is the guy to see for most of the stuff you will need.

Jim probably cornered the market on standard Savage actions ;)
Savage can't compete against Jim in the open market. Why take up advertising space offering actions everybody buys from Jim ;D ;D

You can get the target actions as repeaters with 3 shot mags but you would need to build off a 6br or 22-250 etc. case. The 6.5-284 would not be an option there. However, there are many options open with the above if long range target or even short range medium game are concerned. If your primary thing is accuracy/target I would stick with the target actions and rethink my cartridge choices. If hunting is your main concern which it does not seem like it is, go with the model 10's etc. I have owned both. Dont forget about the heavy barrel choice vs. light barrel. That's just or more important than action choice. if your set on building a custom with a hunting option look into the LRPV repeater. Put a krieger barrel on it, bed it, keep the trigger and use a custom SSS 9rd mag mag in 308, 7mm-08, 6.5x47 etc. It will be good on the target as well.

Whoa... awsome Jims place is just down the road from me ;D Never would have guessed that.

Very good observation about the model 10/12 vs 110/112 i over looked that, ive been having some problems finding exact info on the savage site. But to hell with google, did i mention this sopposed savage nut is within walking distance from me ;D

Thanks guys

Well alrighty then,,, If Jim is just down the road TRUST ME, you don't need us ;D ;D ;D

Mozey on down and see him. Tell the woman you might be gone a few days ;) ;D Jim loves chattin.......

I'm not jealous. If I lived within walkin distance of Jim I'd be penniless.
On second thought. Unless your very wealthy perhaps you should use the phone...

Yeah im not sure if its a good thing or not. At least there isnt much money to take... I will give him a call probably sooner than later with the holidays coming up.

Gotta say, good call Kenny for mentioning Jim right off the bat..

FWIW Rocky. Jim can/will do your ENTIRE build or order the parts you need for a self build/ free suggestions with a five star rating. Theres absolutely no reason to look elsewhere. Jim can give you EXACTLY what you want at cut rate pricing.

OK, so I'm a little jealous but a few pennies richer. Not much of a trade off.

I just saw a Savage stainless custom in 7-08 that was a dandy. Lilja barrel with a nutless Remington setup. Almost looks like the receiver and barrel are one piece. I'm betting it'll be a shooter too.

I liked it well enough that I'll watch for a donor to use instead of a Rem 700. About $100-$150 less money to boot.

ER---UMMM...I just gotta know something. What are the differences between the model 10 action and the model 12 action. I own a 12 and a 112,,I understand the short/long action deal. thanks

Someone switched the barrel before you got it.
I have a 10LE with Matte blueing. I put stainless tubes on it all the time.
Looks OK to me...

jo191145: The BVSS 112 I have is blued receiver/stainless fluted barrel in the .220 swift. It is factory.. nobody switched barrels.

I agree that in the 1990's they started to do that to boost sales along with the choate stock on alot of these rifles. Kinda like all the 1911 clones being duo color, just an advertising thing to boost there sales because alot of guys want a stainless barrle to begin with.

Savage does have a custom shop as well, and I myself have seen rifles from the custom shop that were ordered and never got sold to the original buyer that ended up on the rack at a gun shop where I am. It's like anything else, if the person who orders it doesn't finish paying after the initial deposit to get started, it gets sold to someone else. And from what my buddy at the gun shop tells me, often they end up being a pretty good deal as well. I'm not saying that's where all the odd rifles come from, but it does happen.

I don't see any issue with a blued action and stainless barrel. Mine looks pretty good anyway. And those stainless barrels from Savage often shoot pretty well too. ;)

I stand corrected. Never heard of a Sav factory two tone but anything is possible.
Sometimes large retailers, Cabela etc, will order large batches of rifles that deviate from regular catalog specs.
Could be wrong but I think thats how the thumbhole stock got started on the centerfires.
