savage action

:)guys i was just wondering how good a savage single shot action is for bulding a bench gun.thank's

Hi drd,

Define what you mean by "bench gun" and what you want to do with it? What caliber?

I think Savages are the best factory actions out there right now, althought I'm sure other would disagree, but that my experience and opinion. But I wouldn't stick it in a 6PPC and try to compete in the LV/HV Point Blank Range for groups. You have to go with a custom action for that.

Regards,
Kory

:)kory thank's for your input.i'm looking to build a .20 br for 500 to 600yrd bench shooting and varmint hunting.i'm not looking to compete but i like accuracy.thank's

For your intended use, the Savage single shot action would be ideal. I have a 6BR built on a Savage single shot for the same purpose.

drd,

I agree 100% will Lee. For you intended application, the Savage will work just fine. Go for it and let us know how it turns out!

You may want to read this article about the moderators's Savage 6BR: http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek036.html

Even without a fancy front rest or true match-grade stock, the gun is competitive at the club level in 600yd varmint silhouette matches, shot prone with front rest). It took first place in the Moderator's August club match.

Good luck,
Kory

drd,
The Savage single shot is an ideal platform to build an accurate live varmint rifle. You can have an assortment of barrels made, and change them yourself without a gunsmith. While not benchrest match quality, you can still shoot tiny groups.

thank's chino for your reply.i'm still trying to decide on the stock and whether i should go rem.i have time so i will ponder on which one.

The Savage would be good. Another option, Jerry Stiller is just about to finish his first batch of Stainless Remington clones. They are initially available in .308 bolt face, with a slightly smaller loading port, rear bridge level with front receiver ring, pinned lug, and .003 bolt fit, for $650. They will be available as a single shot, and will not require additional machine work. Since they are the same size, any stock that fits a short action Remington will work.
