Muzzle break

I am bulding a 6.5-284, Kreiger stainless barrel, 700 action, for varmint hunting. What is the best muzzle break? Been hearing about mullond? where do I get one?

I just put a new brake on my 6x47Lapua.
It was designed for the 308's but I tried it anyway. I threaded my barrel for 5/8-24.

Made by AK Concepts in Idaho.

I've never had a brake that increased accuracy. This one did. A friend got one and the first time out, shot the best group this rifle ever shot. He said it really reduced recoil.

Since I'm shooting a 6mm in a hole for 308 it isn't the most efficient. I was shooting shotgun shells at 225 and could see hits on 20X. But my rifle is 16+ lbs.

BUT!! My accuracy tightened right up. I've never had this rifle shoot in the .1s but it does now.
I shot a couple of rounds and moved zero's. Then the next three were a nice tight hole. I couldn't call it a clover just a fat hole.

I tried an experiment with a flash hider, then suppressor and third the AK-C brake. With out a doubt my rifle now shoots better.

My POI shifted up 1.25moa. On Friday I shot to 850 and the poi shift stayed consistent.
My cold bore was 1/8" low. This rifle,or me with it) has been just over a 1/2" cold bore.

So after two outing looking for an accuracy change I've convinced myself that it took a high 3's and 4's gun and turned it into a 1's.

This rifle is a couple of months old and for the first time shoots like my br.

I haven't used many different kinds of brake's so I'm not sure if one is better than the other. I doubt there is really much difference in any of them. I'm sure that some may reduce recoil a LITTLE better than the next, but how much of that would be noticed? Not much is my guess. As far as increasing accuracy, it's possible that one could calm muzzle vibrations down by adding a little weight in the right place. That would be just a lucky occurance if it worked out that way IMO. It does reduce recoil however and that can be a BIG help to accuracy depending on the shooters ability to deal with it. Take an 8lb rifle in 300 ultramag, I KNOW I would shoot such a rifle much better if it were braked.

Oops, I didn't answer your question, I use Harrel's brake's, just got two in the mail yesterday...they are as cheap as any on the market and work just fine for me and others I know.

snbend,if your gun isnt going to be used for competition and is strictly for varminting,a clamshell type such as the JP are excellent for recoil reduction. As long as you dont mind the end of your gun looking like a tank.:D

I pretty much agree. I dont have any experience with them other than the boss on my 300 win mag. It helps a lot. No recoil pad so any help is appreciated.

Just by looking on the web they all seem similar. I plan to shoot prone so I guess one that doesnt have holes in the bottom would make sense.

I'm, having Ron Bartlett put a Vias brake on a CZ .204 Ruger as we speak. I can't see my hits on live targets due to the muzzle flip.

I will keep you posted...

The Vais seems to be in favor for varminting. Be sure that any brake you install has no ports on the bottom. If shooting prone in sandy conditions you get a real wake up call.

I have 6 different kinds of breaks, some cost $250 others cost $50 and it is hard to tell the difference in any of them. The $250 break came with an extra heavy load of bull shit. Some of the breaks have 3 expansion chambers and others only have one. Some of the breaks have .008 bullet clearance while others have .050 and it is hard to tell the difference in any of them.

The Holland break and the Shrewd break from brownell's seem to be about as good as any of them but they do not come with bragg'en rights.

Noth'en seems to bring out a gunsmith's ego like talking about his favorite muzzle break...be fore warned...satisfying his ego is going to cost you big money!

I really like the Vias break, and Ron Bartlett is a gem to deal with from the 3 breaks that I have got from him.

I've got two Holland brakes on my guns and love them both. They're just a little on the loud side. But I guess that's the trade off. Both of my guns just sit there now without any jump and you really get to see what you're hitting!

Just my two cents worth.

My question is: Would the Holland brake still function the same without the three expansion slots? I'd love to keep the muzzle down without all the noise.

To make the brakes really shine, you need lots of muzzle pressure, slow powder). That may not be what you want. Pressure level somewhat affects the choice of brake, some brakes are more efficient on low pressure than others).

Please see the following link for some empirical results, it was posted on the forum or bulletin a while back:

I'm with Roy,user rbertalotto on this forum) for the fact that JP Recoil Eliminator is one of the most effectice, but you'd want double hearing protection, plugs and muffs) while using it...

Nowadays there's also other very effective brakes, mainly designed for IPSC/3-Gun shooting. One example is F2, but it's every bit as loud as JP:

I have tried several of the muzzle brakes and the best I have tried is the OPS, Inc. brake. I have tried a few with the round holes and the all seemed very similar. The round holes increase the sound frequency causing the excessive noise that everyone complains about.
It seems that the best brakes that are not crazy loud are the units that have larger holes and not round holes. The OPS, Inc. unit is designed for the special forces and works very well. I shoot it on a 300 win mag that was abusive before the brake.
Give these guys a try you will be happy with the performance.
