Savage action for F class 'HELP'

Been reading that a Savage might make a fair entry level rifle. I have been looking high & low for a single shot 308, that he,my son) could use until we rebarrel it later for 6.5x284.

Is the 4 round action a problem vs. single shot if so why?

Are there just Savage single shot actions for sale some place?

What are some other alternatives?

Help?

rinoray,
The Savage will make a fine F-Class rig. If you want a solid bottom long action you are going to have to find a used one. They are out there, last year I bought a solid bottom in a 300 wimmag that I promptly had Pac-Nor make a .243 bbl and a 6.5 x 284 barrel.

I have a friend that has a Savage in .308 I think it is called a 10FP. Anyway, it is a repeater and he was winning some matches at 600 yards. It would not soot well at 1000 yards but putting a LW barrel on changed that.

I think the Savages are a great value.

Look on Guns America or Gunbroker.com.

Youn really need a long action for the cartridge you have choosen, meaning you need to loof for a 110 or 112 action.

I shoot a 112BVSS in 308 at 1000 yards and it is fully capable of possibles - shame I am not!

Looking around & Used Savage single shot actions are few & far between. Gun shop also informed me that the 12BVSS 308 only 3 left in distributors warehouse. SO that leads to a decision between waiting for a single to come up used, purchasing a new 12BVSS,good price), or stepping out a little further and getting the Low Profile Single Shot in 22-250 and rebarreling.

Advise & opinions appreciated.

Thanks!

I started and continue to use a 12BVSS in F class at 300 meters but would not hesitate to shoot at longer ranges if I had access. I bought it new as a .243 and after 1500 rounds the barrel gave up. I rebarreled it with a Shilen in 6BR and have subsequently set two local club records. From my view, the solid action would be nice but the box mag version works as good as I can hold and squeeze.

Find one of the older Savage model 10ML that has the locking lugs on the bolt. It is a single shot SA receiver that uses a barrel tenon of 1.120. You will have to have a barrel made specifically for it since it uses a larger than normal barrel tenon, but you can change out the barrel for the muzzle loader and use what ever caliber you choose with it.

I have one and I am in the process now of making a few barrels for it. I am looking for the replacement stock for it now and am trying to find time to do the machine work on the barrels.

I actually like the fact that it uses the larger barrel tenon myself and think this is going to make for a fine shooting rifle. This is the same basis of the action that Savage makes into the WSM rifle, they just don't cut out the magazine slot in the bottom of the receiver.

Try Jim Briggs at Northlander. He has a banner on Savage Shooters website. Ihave his number at the office but i am at home. Tell him Nat sent you.

Check out this article, to see just how far a Savage can be taken. Gerry Nordman, the owner/shooter, placed very well in his first-ever 1000 yard match.

Usally in F-Class or at least at my club they require you to shoot single shot. If you get a repeater you can put a benchrest follower in it and it will allow you use the rifle as a single shot.
