Savage 93R17 in 17hmr?

Hello Everyone,
I’ve had my CZ 457 Varmint @ One now for about 3-4 months and I’m really enjoying shooting this. I stopped into my local gun shop that I like to go to and come across a Savage 17hmr with a grey laminate stock 21”SS barrel. She was a beauty and I was tempted to add it to my collection.
Anyway here is the link to the gun: https://savagearms.com/firearms/sku/96705

My questions are to anyone that is shooting this gun/model what are your impressions of it, accuracy ammunition that seems to work best with this gun. It retails at $509 and its listed at $479.

Thanks in advance for any info you decide to share with me on this.

I have that same SSHB Sav. 93/17 HMR except mine is the model that came with the laminated thumbhole stock.

Having had one for a number of years now I'd say they are a solid middle of the road gun. Mine has never really given my any problems. How the magazine clicks into place is a little on the cheesy side but once you see exactly how it locks the magazine into place you'll be fine. Also once the magazines get some use on them ever so often the feedlips need to be squeezed back together with a pair of pliers because they have a tendency to spread apart and you'll get a magazine all loaded and before you know it all the rounds will squirt out the top like a waterfall.

Other than the magazine issues which really are relatively minor they're a pretty solid rifle and mine shoots well enough to kill sage rats fairly easy out to a couple hundred yards.

I think the CZ is definitely a higher quality rifle and if you really like your CZ the Savage though a couple hundred dollars cheaper may not put a smile on your face like the CZ does. Like I said my Sav. 93/17 has been relatively-ish trouble free and shoots pretty well but if I was in the market for a new 17 HMR I would happily pay the higher price for the CZ.

Thank you for the insight! Yes I love my CZ but really didn’t have any intentions of going in to buy the gun. It was just sitting there looking sooo puurty and it caught my eye especially with the Gray laminate stock and the SS barrel. Really had a solid feel when I picked it up. The 17hmr was something I’ve never really wanted but I thought that it would be a nice accent to my 22/rim fire collection.

I have a 93R17 with the Gray laminate stock, it's a solid gun, shoots very well for being based on RF ammo. I use it on sage rats but only out to 100-125yds. I like the splat/red mist factor so I switch over to the CF's for those past 125 yds or so. I've not had any feeding issues with my gun/magazine, but I've only got 500-1000 rds thru it, so...

The gun is nothing really to look at, it's not shiny and pretty, but very functional.

Great! Thank you for your insight! I’m tring to be smart but the puuurdyness is messing with me. I’m a fan of accuracy in any gun that I buy so I’m just trying to justify the purchase + I don’t have a 17hmr rifle.

BTW, I plan to put on my old Arken 5-25x56 scope on it. While its not my Vortex Strike Eagle, it should still perform well with this gun I’d think anyway.

I have one on the plane jane dyed mystery wood. It doesn't matter though. Thing is a laser. Shot many a squirrel with it using CCI game points with the tiny HP tip (not plastic tips). It's a great small game rifle when all the leaves are on the ground And you can see what you're hunting from farther away

Thanks for the input! So CCI shoots pretty well with this model gun?

I have a 93R17 FV, which is the cheaper polymer stocked model. I don’t know how many rounds I’ve put through it with no issues other than some early mag issues since resolved. VERY accurate out to 200. My particular gun prefers the CCI TNT JHP. Lots of fun!
Great! Thank you for the insight!

I have an old 93r17 That I bought in 2002. The new ones are a lot different than mine as they did not come with an accutrigger back then and only came with wood stocks. It is a fun gun to shoot though and capable of about 1" at 100 yards.

Mine may finally need a new firing pin spring as I have been getting misfires with Winchester ammo only.

Great, thank you for this information! Yes this one has the Accutrigger which I think is pretty cool that you can adjust the pull weight. I have my CZ setup for 15oz with a spring change.
I like the fact this can be done similarly with this Savage as well.

I have that exact rifle and, after bedding it, it is a real tack driver. My friends also have that model and we all found that the Hornady ammo (V-Max) is hands down the best shooting in our rifles. None of our rifles would shoot CCI ammo at all. Couldn't give the stuff to one another. I think you would be very happy with that rifle.

Thanks for that info on the Ammo! I’ve kinda wondered what really shoots best with these rifles. Good info here!

Thanks!
