Savage 93R17 accuracy issues

Good idea but nobody makes a bore scope that'll fit in these tiny little .172 bores. Maybe Hawkeye does but they're about $1,000
Maybe remove the side view mirror to look straight ahead at the rifling leades and into muzzle??

I’ve tried 2 different stocks with the same results. The groups are at 50 yards. My other. Savage had better groups at 100 than this gun had at 50.

I used to have 2 of them for small Varmints around the house. Both were factory - One shot incredibly well and the other did not. I traded the one that didn’t shoot back in where I bought it, and the one guy I bought it from noticed that the bore of the barrel wasn’t centered in the muzzle of the barrel.

I don't recommend this but if all else fails and your frustration level gets maxed out and you just need to release some of that frustration and anger you can do what a guy over on RFC did to his Savage Bmag when he just couldn't take its poor shooting anymore, he beat the damn thing against a tree until his arms got tired. That, obviously, didn't fix his Bmag's piss poor shooting qualities but he did say it made him feel a whole lot better.

That sounds pretty fun actually! And I’m going to give it a good cleaning tonight and I’ll report back

It's been a few years since the guy posted that over on RFC but he'd gotten pretty fricken frustrated with his Bmag not shooting for shit, they sometimes have a way of doing that to people, and he was actually very funny about it and said after he beat it against the tree it was the only time it ever gave him any pleasure. LOL

Things to think about -

Have you checked the bedding?

Does the barrel/action have any discernable movement when you loosen one of the action screws? (I am unfamiliar with this rifle but am assuming that it has two action screws)

Have you tried more torque on the action screws? 15 inch lbs seems light, try somewhere around 25 - 30 inch lbs.

Put out windflags every 25 yards or so - the groups look lilke a wind issue to me. The windflags can be as simple as a piece of surveryors tape about 12 - 14 inches long. Don't shoot unless the flags are doing the same thing each time you shoot. The 17's main attribute is that it shoots flat however they are more wind sensitive than the ballistic tables indicate them to be.

Do the simple things before starting to throw money at the rifle.

Bedding was my first thought here as well. I bought one of these quite a few years ago - I did a skim bed job that completely changed the rifle.

Ammo also played a major role for me. Hornady 17gr vmaxs shoot great. Hornady 20s not so much. Just my 2¢!

Probably needs a real good cleaning.... I don't own a .17 but if it's like any other Rimfire bullet selection is key also.... Maybe try another scope...

Never heard of him. Anybody use this guy before? That rimfire accuracy package seems very reasonable
Yes, and i would not use him again. The DIP bottom metal is a really good idea. I have one of the first .17hmr heavy barrel, and a std barrel that my father had. I bed them both when we got them, and the HB has shot many 1/2" groups and the std has shot many 3/4" or less groups. Both have a RB trigger. I did pollish the crap out of both barrels when we got them. If it was mine, I would skim bed, and put the DIP metal on it.

A couple of things I would try first before looking for a pond is clean the crap out of it. Clean until you think its clean, then do it again. Then ditch the bi-pod and shoot it off a decent solid rest. It may take a few rounds to season the barrel before it tightens up. Try some different ammo weights, if you have some. If that fails to help, then swap it off or find the closest pond. I'm having a hard time thinking the rifle won't shoot, its a Savage. It should shoot.

For those that suggested cleaning….thanks. I just spent about 30-45 minutes scrubbing the barrel. It was way dirtier than I thought. DIP bottom metal has been ordered. Once that’s in, I’ll take another trip to the range and report back. Step 2 will be bedding if the groups have improved after the deep clean

A guy by the name of CaveDwellar has several videos on You Tube about shooting and bedding Savage rimfires, Usually pretty interesting and he has good results.

Well, I stopped in a local pawn shop today and they had a Savage HB in a wooden stock on the shelf. The price was right and I thought may as well try one of these for myself. Maybe I'll have better luck than the OP. It was used but not abused. Don't laugh at the scope, it came on it.

I watched a couple videos and they look good. I’ve had great success with glass bedding. He’s gonna start it off shooting decent but with a flyer. Again she was like garbage. I’m getting twice his groups at 50 yards before glass bedding. Truthfully I don’t have high hopes for this rifle
