Savage 6mm Norma BR 1 in 8" twist??

So, I was at a gun show yesterday and a dealer had 2 Savage LRPVs on his table. One was in 22-250 and the other in 6mm Norma BR. The price for the 6mm was $795 with a Barska scope on it, go figure right? Anyway, the dealer came down to $700 almost immediately. I knew it was a very good deal but I thought I would walk away and offer him less in about an hour. That lasted about 20 minutes when I saw another guy pick it up for more than a minute. He still had the gun in his hands when I handed the $700 to the dealer. He said he wasn't going to buy it anyway, and was happy for me. I was working the show with a friend, so I took the scope off and sold it immediately for $50. I kept the rings so I can shoot it as soon as possible. BTW, it was an $80 scope. I have a couple of 1" Leupold 6.5x20s that I can mount for now. So I have $650 total into the rifle as of now, I think that is a pretty good deal. The gun belonged to a 75 year old man who died, the dealer bought several guns from his daughter, including the other LRPV. I am encouraging my buddy to buy it. The other one didn't even have a scope mounted and I think it was probably unfired. Mine is very clean and may have been shot, but only a little.
Now for the questions. This rifle is chambered in 6mm Norma Bench Rest. As I understand it that means the neck is a little longer than 6mmBR, is that correct? The next question is about twist rate. This barrel has a 1 in 8" twist which, as I understand it, is a little fast compared to most of the other 6mm BRs out there. Most of them seem to be using 1 in 10 or 1 in 12 twists. As such, I assume this barrel was intended to shoot the heavier bullets. My question is will it handle the something in the 90 grain range fairly well. The reason I ask is because I found some reasonably priced ammo, that uses the 90 grain Lapua scenar bullet. At about a $1 a piece I thought I would buy a couple hundred rounds if only for break in and the brass. I would also, at the same time, like to order a variety of bullets, but I don't want to waste money on a bullet that probably won't shoot well. I am sure that I will have other questions along the way. Thank you in advance, CZ.

I built a 6mmBR Norma around an 8 twist 6mmBR Rem barrel. Took the barrel to a GS and had him throat it for 105 A-Max and 105 Hornaday HPBT. That's the difference in a Norma, throat length for the longer bullets.

The Berger 105 Hybrid is not too expensive and shoots very well with Varget and CCI450, Lapua Brass out of my 8 twist, 28 inch X-caliber barrel mentioned above.

The A-Max is not produced anymore, too bad, it shot really well out to 1000 yds.

These are long range bullets though, and may not be what you are looking for if shooting at 300 yds or less as they seem to prefer stretching their legs. Still, they won't disappoint. Of course, there's all kinds of custom made bullets if you prefer and money is no object.

In your LRPV I would suggest starting with the 105 HPBT Hornaday and 30.0 grs of Varget. And be sure to check out the 6mmBR loads thread at the top of this board.

Good shooting!

NICE FIND ! .......... All of your questions can be answered in the 6mmBR cartridge guide found on this sight...... You will be very happy you got an 8 twist for its versatility for both light and heavy bullets. Enjoy!

Nice find. I am working on some loads for a Ruger #1 that was re-chambered from 6ppc to 6mm BR Norma. Its got a ppc twist of 1:12 so I am going to be shooting the lighter bullets, 85 gr and down. I bought it to shoot paper casually and use as a more windy day coyote gun (under 400) so the lighter bullets (65-85 gr or so) are OK.

I shot some factory Lapua 90 gr stuff just to pull the trigger and at 50 yards they horizontally key holed the target....... just the difference in twist. You should love that 1:8.

Enjoy

Thanks guys, I will look at the loads section as soon as I can fin it. Haven't looked yet. I am going to order some of the 90 grain Lapua stuff today or tomorrow. Hopefully it will shoot well, if not I will still have the brass and the ammo will help break in the barrel. I don't think this thing has seen many rounds down the tube at all. Bruce, I read your thead about the Ruger #1, a lot of interesting stuff in there from the guys who answered your questions. It was your thread that made me realize that my barrel was made for the heavier bullets.

I've shot up to 108 bergers in a savage 1/8. All the bergers shoot great, but are a little expensive. Hornady 105 Amax was always a good choice, but I think they discontinued that bullet (not sure).

the 90g Berger target gives me my favorite load in my Savage. I don't remember if I ever shot them in the original barrel (now on my 3rd barrel). I do remember, with the original barrel, the 80 and 88 grain Berger varmint bullets shot very well.

what's nice about the Berger 90's is that the boat tail is very short. this allows you to chase the lands more that other 90's wih a longer boat tail.

I think most 6mmbr barrels are chambered for the 105g bullets. try the 107SMK which shot extremely well in my current PacNor 7.5 twist.
