Savage 6mm br shilen problem .

Hope someone can help me with this I'm having heavy bolt lift after firing. I have tried very light loads ,small base die, triming necks . My Wilson headspace Guadge measures fired brass is 10 thousands over resized brass and I understand that is what is giving me heavy bolt lift. I just don't know how this is happening I used ptg headspace go and no go guage and checked it several times with the extracted and ejector removed . And I have also tryed differnt powder and bullets.

What is it you think is giving you hard bolt lift ?
Have you checked , galled receiver lugs , galled cocking ramp , bolt face not at 90 deg to center line , extruded primer in fp hole , front of lugs or single lug , firing pin spring not installed correctly .
How does it feel without a case in the chamber but the firing pin down ?
What do fired cases look like ? Is it a stainless action , a factory built rifle ?
Was the barrel loose when installing ? Chamber too rough ? If so it should show on the case . How many rounds thru rifle and has this been a problem since new ?

I'm using wilson case length headspace guage my fired case is 10 thousands longer than resized case . I usually bumb shoulder back 1.5 thousands on my 47 lapua . And I used go and no go gauges and checked many times .

I shot this gun new when it was savage model 12 22-250 and worked good having problems with new barrel shilen prefit barrel . I have install many pre fits on savages never had this problem. I think the neck shoulder junction in chamber is ruff but I don't know lol

Need to look at the chamber with a bore scope . Somewhere you have an issue giving you a false reading. I also think something is weird with your sizing die adjustment. Why aren't you bumping back the .010 long case only about .002 ?

Won't close on the no go? I just measured my 6BR PTG go/no go. .005 difference.

Get rid of the wilson and get a set of hornady headspace gauges

So are you sizing your fired brass back to SAAMI spec? If so quit!

bump the shoulder 1 to 2 thousands on your fired brass. Use the hornady headspace gauges.

If it was a prefit barrel I purchased ....I would send it back! The chamber was machined to long from what you mentioned. Send it back!

I looked at you case and agree the shoulder /case taper looks OFF ( best word to describe a pict ) I would send back and also question your gauges .
If the shoulder angle is dif than your gauges you could have the problem described .

Thank you I agree it is in the mail going to get a new barrel. I would also thank all the people who replied it was very helpful thank you!

I had the same problem with a Shilen barreled 6br. The problem was bolt thrust. Short cartridges like these don't have very much surface area to grab the chamber walls and if there is just a small bit of oil in the chamber the case is doesn't expand well to fit the chamber, it pushes rearward agains the boltface making it difficult to lift the bolt. The fix is simple.....just clean the chamber with brake cleaner or some oiless cleaner even alcohol before firing.

Is your primer high after shooting?
If so, try a benchrest or magnum primer.

As I understand it, the headspace guages are setting your barrel to accept factory loaded cases. If your gun is never going to shoot factory loads you can install your barrel using virgin brass for a HS guage and reset your bump.

I had the same problem with a Shilen barreled 6br. The problem was bolt thrust. Short cartridges like these don't have very much surface area to grab the chamber walls and if there is just a small bit of oil in the chamber the case is doesn't expand well to fit the chamber, it pushes rearward agains the boltface making it difficult to lift the bolt. The fix is simple.....just clean the chamber with brake cleaner or some oiless cleaner even alcohol before firing.
