Savage 6MM B.R. Pistol

Been a while since I've been around. I started this build quite a while back and posted on it. The pistol has been done for months just sitting gathering dust. Being off work after right elbow surgery and my arm weak and recovering I decided to load and shoot a few rounds. I started shooting with a bipod attached to the forearm and some loads were shooting decent groups but not what I expected.

Pic of the build.

I pulled the bipod from the pistol and shot a couple groups using a rifle rest front and sand bag back. Even with shooting into the sun with a weak sore arm things got way better. Now I'm back to square one and will start Load-D again. I dont think this pistol likes a bipod!

These are 4 shot groups at 100 yards.

This group measures .248

Hope the elbow surgery goes well, David. I'm a big fan of Varget, especially in the 6 BR. In my experience (with rifles) I think those 33.5 and 34.0 gr. with the 70-gr. Sierra (or even better, 68-gr. Bergers) is going to be your "killer load".

Not sure what you've done with seating depth, but I'd like to see you try some at -10, -5, "at", +5 and +10 in the lands. The first thing to look for in early load testing is a group that is concentric and the 34.0 Varget load meets that criterion. Now, the H335 loads look good, though not comparable because they were shot off a different rest set-up. They may be work looking into, but I do not have sufficient experience with H335 to be of any value. With my Varget loads, I get the best consistency with CCI 450 primers.

Nice-looking rig and I wish you well with it. Keep us posted as you go ...

Hey Reed

Now that I've realized that the bipod was a problem my Load-D will start all over. I built the pistol just for the fun of playing with and hope to keep with economical priced bullets. Once I get a load worked out that gives me consistent groups at 100 yards I will stretch it out and see what I can do. And if not happy shooting it as a pistol the barrel is long enough that I can unbolt the grip and add a rifle stock.

The rig looks like great fun to me. If you have a fairly short leade and can hit the lands with them, give the Speer 70-gr. TNT a try. I've had good luck with them as "inexpensive" bullets. I would add a level, either on the scope or mount, to make sure it's level every time and I think you're gonna have some fun. Enjoy ...

I had a few loads left and went to the range today. The bottom and bottom left I shot. A guy there had never seen anything like this pistol so I let him shoot the top and top left groups. For have never fired this gun he did pretty darn good and his loads were .5 heavier than mine could have made a little difference. All were 3 shot groups at 100Yards and windy. My best was .230 I think this ole gun is going to be some fun!!!!!
