savage 6br 12bench rest to varmint rifle

I am thinking about making my bench rest savage 6br into a varmint rifle. Looking for suggestions for stocks , and cutting barrel to 24 inch. I love the 6br but do way more varmint than bench shooting. All Ideas welcome!!

Isn`t the Savage BR gun the one with the black laminated stock and the flat forend????

If it is, i`d use it just the way it is.....

it is the bench rifle with the wide forend , i was looking to make it into a more mobile varmint rifle. I like the round , i am looking more for a 500 yd varmint rifle that will buck the wind if needed not the super long range bench gun

Work up shorter range loads, or use the big 105's and sight it in closer. Stocks can be changed for carrying purposes, I think several are making them now.

James,
Just put some 87gr Vmax in it and you are good to go. My varmints guns have 3" stocks and do fine, 6BR and 6BRX. Look for a Savage LRPV stock, it is a black syn stock. I have one in 223AI.

Way barrel heavy isn't it? Need to whack that long barrel down at the very least if you plan to carry it around. Boyds might be able to help you will a stock improvement. What is already on there is a good stock so you might be able to sell it for decent amount.

I varmint "harvest" with my 6mm BR and it was built as if it was to be a bench rest rig and it accounted for the most one shot one kills this past year. Your 12 twist will shoot 80 gr bullets into one little hole...87 and 88 s possibly. My gun is not a walking gun, so weight is not a problem...it weighs 15+#. I left the barrel at 27 in for additional speed. 68 gr bullets are pushed at 3500+ fps and many ghogs don't move after being hit. My twist is 14 and can push 62 gr bullets at 3600+ fps...speed and high BCs buck the wind, esp beyond 350 yds. My 22 BRs are second for varmint harvest.

I use 80 gr berger flat base and yes one hole for sure. the 105 bergers also shoot great , my I dea was to shorten barrel and make it more carry friendly, and to get a varmint stock for it. I do not walk around like a walking rifle, but it is just a bear to haul around unless using my bench in fields. I sure have no problems with the accuracy of the rifle

This may have already been mentioned, but don't forget that the action on a Savage Model 12 Benchrest is a SINGLE SHOT rifle and not exactly what you want in a VARMINT RIFLE. Just something to think about.

thanks everyone for the comments, I should have stated a dedicated ground hog gun, I have varmint rifles coyote and fox . iam still pondering especially the barrel length to fit nicely into a varmint stock

ok new problem,, had a line on a stock but my action screws measure 3.5 center to center, all the stocks I have looked at are 4.4 spacing. do I need to learn how to read a ruler??? is there two different spacings???

Yes! 3.4" and 4.4"

Do you have a dual port or a single port? How old is your gun?

I've had 1 of each in the past, the dual port was the 3.4". I may get corrected on this but I believe the current Target Actions in all port configurations are 3.4". If you do indeed have a 3.4" I can tell you from experience finding a used stock is almost impossible. If you really want to go the varmint route, give in "bite the bullet" and order a custom. Finding used Target Action stock's cause hair loss! ;D I have a VLP stock in the for sale section but it's for a 4.4".

Savage 'Palma' action.......3.5"

Savage target action & center feed spacing...4.41"

Old SA Savage...4.27"
