Savage .284 Winchester

New to this Forum. I have a Savage Model 99F in .284. It's serial number dates it to 1966. Great gun. I am having trouble locating new .284 ammo. Even .284 new brass is hard to come by. Anybody know of any available? A friend at my local gun club wants to buy my gun. I have no idea what it is worth. Not interested in selling it but if ammo is that hard to find I might make the deal. Any idea what its worth? I have had this gun since 1969 given to me by a relative. I'd say the gun is probably 75 to 80 percent.
Thanks.

Dude. Don’t let anyone low-ball you on the gun. It’s a rare and desirable piece!

Factory ammo is REALLY hard to come by. Winchester does a limited run once a year. Reloading, however, is no issue and brass (in the form of 6.5-.284) is easily found.

How about posting some pix?

I believe that Winchester makes a run of ammo every once in a great while. I know they usually make a run of empty brass roughly once a year which works if you can find someone to load for you ? The rifle and cartridge combination you have is definitely a classic and a dandy deer gun. I would not be an expert on value - but unless you need the cash, you may want to hold onto it. I personally would have interest in it, but again I do not know what a true value on it is and would not horn in on your friend. Your particular gun will certainly not lose value if you hold onto it. Good Luck !

I have a 284WIN long range bench rest /F Class gun (Savage PTA action) and share your complaint about brass shortage. I use W-W brass and wait patiently for availability. I recently bought 100 more cases so you may find some, just check google for retailers. I also tried Lapua 6.5-284 but while easy to form, the ensuing "donut" after shooting a couple times drove me back to W-W. And, they are way cheaper. If you are a hunter, a bag of 50 cases will last a lifetime. If you don'r reload, you may find a friend who does so all you need is a LEE collet die/bullet seating die set. Or, you may even be able to find a 284 WIN Lee Loader set for around $20!

Cabela's and many other brass distributors have Winchester brand 284 brass. Around 34-39.00 per 50. All in stock today. Good luck. Loaded 284 ammo is not made today that would have a short enough OAL to fit in that rifle. HSM made some with 150 power point type bullets and IF they still make it, could possibly work. Do not believe they make it currently.

Nando-as,
Jerry Tierny, one of the countries best shots from here in the Sacramento area told
me about his experience with the 284WIN that Winchester brass was just as accurate as Lapua except it was slightly weaker in the primer pocket area so super heavy loads would loosen them. I have loosened some during load development, but not with reasonable loads (like 180 gr bullets going less than 2840 fps or so).

I been looking for a Savage 99 in 284win for a long time...

Mind you I live in Canada, thus making availability of this rare Chambering in the Model 99 vary rare indeed.

I might just settle on a 308win Sav.99 if the condition and price is right. Maybe even a 250 Savage.

I am working with a friend on his 284 win lever gun. It is as Winchester not a Savage, so this may be a non issue with your Savage. My friend had someone load a bunch of ammo in different bullets and weights. I measured it all and the guy that loaded it did a very good job it was all loaded according to the specs in the reloading manual. However it would not feed. I found a few rounds of Winchester factory ammo and measured it and found that the OAL was shorter on the Winchester ammo than the hand loads. I set the bullets the same as the Winchester factory ammo and now it all feeds. It wasn't very much of a change but it made all the difference in the world.

284Winner and others. Thank you very much for your help. I ordered 100 cases from Cabela's and they are arriving tomorrow.
Thanks to all for the info.
