Savage 16/116 Long Action problem

Does the firing pin reset on the bolt lift or does it reset when it’s in the rearward position hitting on that stop (or whatever it’s called-sorry not a gunsmith). Swapped the factory stock for a McMillan Hunter Stock and the firing pin doesn’t always reset, when it does not reset the stop also does not pop up so essentially the bolt comes right out. I’ve tried a number of things, including shaving the inside of th stock where there were wear marks, shaved the bottom of the internal blind magazine, played with the torque on the action screws. Nothing has worked.

Savage cocks on open. With stock out of action, and not cocked raise bolt handle, at top of bolt lift it should cock. If it does not cock out of the stock, there is a problem in the firing mechanism, if it cocks out of stock there is interference with the stock. The stop that is not popping up, is a cocked indicator. If it cocks out of the stock & not in the stock remove trigger guard & see if it cocks. It is likely that the rear of the trigger, just below the trigger return spring, is contacting the stock, or the screw behind the trigger guard.

I pulled it out of the stock and it cocks every time. Inside the stock it’s not cocking at all now. So like you said it has to be stock interference still. I didn’t have the rear screw that holds the back of the trigger guard in when I put it in the stock last so that can be ruled out? Is it the bottom portion to the rear of the trigger but in front of the metal screw hole that you’re talking about making contact?

Edit:just reread your post. I took the trigger guard off and tried it with only the front action screw in and no trigger guard. It cocked every time with the trigger guard off. With the guard on it did not cock.

If you look at your factory stock you will see a cut out just ahead of the trigger (at screw location) you need to carefully grind out some of your new stock to match this cut out or your new stock will not allow the trigger to function.
Stock makers do not usually cut this area out. Go slow and check for fit often.
Been there and have done this many times, twice with McMillan's.

I sold the factory stock already, the portion further towards the muzzle end?

Where the trigger sets at the pillar for the back action screw. There needs to be clearance for the sear to move freely. I normally make about a 45* angle opening just behind that rear pillar and keep going until the trigger functions with no hang ups.

Two McMillan stocks both for savage actions I had to dremel down by the back pillar as it was holding the trigger actuated when the action screw were tightened
