Savage 12 models

most people know about savage and how cheaper they are than most other companys. i've seen some of their target rifles and they seem good, but how good are they. i thought about buying one of their cheaper models and them putting a bell & carlson stock on it. what do you guys think?

WannaShoot18: I bought a new Savage mdl. 10FP, .223 in Aug. '00, just before the accu-trigger became available. It has been basically a very good shooter, but it really improved when I recently bought & installed the Bell & Carlson Tactical "Medalist" stock. Receiver dropped-in without any fitting, barrel does not touch all the way back to the nut, and it does not have the "springy" feel, like the factory $2.95 stock. The full-length aluminum bedding block is a vast improvement. Mine is the model #2999-02, flat black, delivered to my door for $213, from "Shooters Discount",Summit MS 39666. Really like the vertical pistol grip and the 2 1/4" wide flat fore-end: rides the front bag perfectly. One of my "best" purchases, and the folks at "Shooters Discount" were the best!:)

I have owned and still do quite a few Savage rifles, and if you don't want to go all out then I would suggest to buy a BVSS and start shooting, I owned a B&C stock before and it is very light and jumped all over the place even with a 243, 24" varmint contour barrel.

I don't see the point in buying a $300 rifle and then spending another $400 on it. Just buy a bvss and be done with it.

FYI I competed last year with a 112 single shot in a Stockade 100/200 BR stock; SSS 6mmbr 12 twist bbl, Sav 2 trigger, Farrell mount, and 100 rounds of Lapua brass. I sold it for $800 at the end of the season. Helluva deal on a well sorted rifle.

For you guys that have the 6br LRPV...what type of group size are you seeing out of the box with maybe a couple weekends of load development? I want to know just how good a rifle were talking about...?

the neat part of doing a cheap savage is you have money left to put your choice of triggers, stocks and barrels on it. i would rather have a nice shilen, krieger, etc. barrel that you know is gonna shoot. when you get done you have a rifle a little different than everybody else and thats always nice. cliffe
