savage 12 F Class 6mmBR

I was about ready to buy this rifle after reading how accurate it was . . . . and then I came across a posting where half of the people had good luck and the other half had rifles that had to go back to the factory. Mostly bad barrels. In this posting most of the rifles discussed were the 6.5X284. Seems as though Savage has its share of quality problems? What is your opinion? Is it worth taking the risk?

I would suggest you thnk about building one rather than buyong the factory gun. That way you will get a much better barrel, custom stock, and pride of having a custom gun. Cost will only be slightly higher than the factory rifle and almost a guaranteed fly shooter.

Savage LRPV Action $459, http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=107879825 )
Pac-Nor Super-Match barrel $425, http://www.pac-nor.com/ )
Sharp Shooter Supply stock $299 , http://www.sharpshootersupply.com/ )

Total for "custom" Savage $1183. Then you will have a super shooter and no need to worry about whether the barrel will shot or not.

I have a right bolt left ejection action and would not suggest this action for prone shooting, but it is great for the bench.

Good to go

I agree with Travelor, because, as he stated, you can customize the gun to your taste. However, I wouldn't say that Savage has broad quality issues. I own a bunch of their guns,,and I love the way those guns are put together and shoot),and know many others with their guns, including their 6.5-284 LRPV,the guy just shot a 1.250 inch group at 500 yards with that gun, and several 1.500 groups with it the same day at 500). They did have an initial problem with that barrel, and I don't know how many barrels they sold like that? If you discuss it with them, they will probably take it back if it was manufactured during the problem batch and rebarrel it with the new barrel. Savages are so easy to customize that it is just a better plan to go the custom route anyway. Have fun.

richard295: Savage, like most factory production rifles, continue to have a problem with a large amount of reamer/tool marks across the lands & grooves, as I can see with my borescope, in 2 mdl. 10FP and 1 mdl. 12BVSS, but they are producing groups smaller than would be expected with barrels of that interior roughness. Go figure. Copper fouling is, as can be expected, more of a problem than you'll get with a lapped Hart, Krieger, etc. My thoughts are: buy the Savage, shoot it, assuming it is "good", then later, re-barrel with a Hart, Krieger, Shilen, etc. They must also be properly bedded, since the factory "bedding" is a hole in the stock, into which the receiver happens to fit: a lot of slop. For their cost though, they are still hard to beat, and are easy to re-barrel, when the factory barrel is shot-out. Just my opinion with 3 Savages.

I will just add if you are going to build it your self spend another $41.00 and get your action from SSS. Fred sells them for $500.00 and they are timed and trued. You will need to finish the stock and purchase a Savage barrel nut wrench, vise and go-no-go gauges.

F.Y.I. I have a Savage F Class in 6mm Norma Br and have not had any problems. 176 bullets down the barrel, best group .110 mostly shooting in the .2's. Have only shot 105/107 gr bullets. This is from the stock factory gun.

+1 on Fred at SSS. There will be a wait for any work from Fred though, as he is a popular guy. Buying the trued and time action from him though is a great suggestion.

Watched a Savage in 6BR with the 1/12 bbl win the any/any match we had after our usual HP match this weekend. Steven, a youngster, shot a 200 with 20Xs on the MR63 target...thats a 2 3/4 inch X ring. he didnt shoot it off a bench either...prone, on the ground, off a bidpod, its his groundhog rig!) He shot 80gr Bergers in some switchy winds in the valley at Boone. Pretty impressive rifle..and shooter, if you ask me. For box stock, thats tough to beat.

On building your own, arent we forgetting about gunsmithing costs? Or is it so easy to build one now that even someone like me can put one together,I shoot T2ks for that reason, cause if an idiot like me can rebarrel one!)

I ended up buying the 12 F LRPV in 6mmbr. I just shoot at 100 or 200 yards . . . and so I would never use it at 1000 yds.
The F class stock and 30" barrel are a bit excessive for an all around 100 yd range rifle. I am hoping the throat in this 1/12 twist is not so long that I sit a mile off the lands. I like the Berger 80gr or the Sierra MK 70gr. Building my own would be out of my league.
Thanks gents for all you valuable inputs.

John,

No gunsmith required. You buy a go-gauge, a barrel nut wrench, and some form of an action wrench and your a Savage-switching-mechanic. That's the beauty of the barrel nut. I can buy a pre-fit premium barrel,PacNor, Shilen, etc) and set the headspace myself to my exact tolerance. I had never even seen a chambered a couple of years ago and didn't know what headspace meant. I have 3 actions and 6 barrels and I switch barrels all the time for different setups. It is that easy.

Let us know how the throat is on the 6BR LRPV. The only one I have seem was throated too long to seat the 62-68gr flatbase bullets into the lands.

Richard, let us know how it works for you. I'd say chances are good you'll get decent accuracy from it.

Coverdog, those are great results you're getting. Did you have to order the rifle? I say this because I recently saw my first 12F,was a T/R), even though they've been out for awhile. Another question if I may, since the stock is designed to ride the bags, how well do you think it tracks?

A friend of mine just bought the new Savage F-Class in 6BR. He said the throat has a lead of .100. With this lead, you will be able to shoot 80 to 107grn bullets. I am having a custom 6BR built with a .100 lead and my smith said It will shoot the 87grn V-Max, 88grn Berger on up to the 105grn bullets.

If the lead is .100 on the Savage, I don't think you will be able to shoot the lighter bullets like the 55grn to 70grn 6mm bullets. However, I might be wrong and it will shoot the lighter bullets too. I guess you will just have to try them out. That's the beauty of the 6BR, it has extra long barrel life, you don't have to worry about burning the barrel out.

js223.....My gun shop found a distributor down south that had them in stock.

As far as the gun tracking, I am using a Fire Control front rest, which had to be modified) as I explained in another post. And I had Protektor make up a rear bag with 1" spacing between the ears,5 lines) and shooting free recoil it seems to track very nice. This is my first BR type gun.

Thanks CoverDog. I just stopped in the shop tonight to check on availability of the 12F/6BR. He called the distributor and they had a 6.5-284 in stock, but are waiting for some 6BRs to come in. I may have to get on the wait list for one. For the distances around here, max 600), I'd prefer the 6BR over the 6.5-284. Now if I was near a 1000yd range, that 6.5 would look pretty good.
