Savage F Class

Ok, I'm a lurker and really enjoy reading all of the information that you guys share back and forth. And from what I have read, I think I can get really good advice from y'all. So, here's my question. I am thinking I would really like to buy a Savage F Class rifle in 6mm BR with the 30 inch 1 in 8 twist barrel. I'm not buying it for competition shooting, yet). I just want to get my feet wet and not spend a ton of money in the process. What are the pro's and con's of investing in one of these off the shelf F Class rifles from Savage?

Here is a review from one of the top shooters. Nothing but positives about this rifle from what I have heard. Not so with the 6.5x284 and the 308. I am building that exact rifle with a Shilen barrel and a SSS stock.

Nocturnal, Ive got the F-Class in the 6.5-284 and love it. Im actually trying to get my other rifles to shoot as well as it does. Im not a marksmen or anything, just like to shoot. But, my 6.5-284 at 375yards has put 10 rounds in 2.265" the first time I shot that distance. The more I think about it, I would really like to try the 6BR F-Class.

A friend of mine fust got in his .308 Ft-r, were breaking it in right now, hopefully the scope will be here soon, to see how well it shoots.

I really like them.

I'm a "wanna be" long range shooter. Just recently I've found a place to safely shoot 300 yards and I'm loving it. I want to eventually shoot to 600 yards and further. From what I'm reading the Savage 12 F is a really good, economical place to start. Sounds like your 6.5 is doing very well. I was thinking of the 6br as being a great "in-betweener rifle" from my .204 and .223 rifles to my 7mm RM. I'm thinking I have to have one. I'll keep you posted on where I go from here. Thanks for the info.

Noc,
I own both the 6.5x284 and the 6mmBR Savage F-Class rifles. Both are fantastic. If I had bought the 6mmBR first, I wouldn't have been easily tempted to by the 6.5x284. I love the 6.5 cartridge and have a couple rifles in it but really like the 6mmBR. Cheaper to shoot, very accurate, easy to load for ....
Good Luck,
Scott

Noc, The 6mmbr would be a good choice. Like Effen siad, it will be alot cheaper to shoot and barrel life will be much longer. Ive even thought about changing mine over to the 6mmbr once my factory barrel shoots out.

But, all in all you will like it.

If it were me, I'd build a gun. Cost will be just about equal and the otucome will be much better. THis is well within the cpability of the average fellow.

Savage LRPV action and trigger
SSS stock - you pick the style and color
Pac-Nor barrel

The barrels are prechambered and just screw on and MUCH BETTER than Savage barrels. The stocks are inlet and just need glass bedded, sanded, and surface finished.

The result will be a much better shooter and the pride of shooting "your" gun will be well worth the little bit of work.

I agree with travelor, after you build your first gun using a Savage action, you'll be hooked on it. About every major barrel maker has pre-fit barrels for the Savage actions, and there are a number of variations on actions by Savage, so be careful on witch barrel shank size you order. Shooting times did an article this month on building a varmint rig from the Savage target action. The cost could be lower by about $500 though than he stated in the article. If one of my Savage builds does not shoot 1/2 MOA after I work up loads, and I can't figure it out, it gets torn a part and made something else. I haven't had one yet after 7 builds that would not shoot 1/2 MOA or better. I am no gunsmith either. The barrel is the biggest factor, so buy the best you can afford. savageshooters.com has all the info and advise you need. Have fun whatever way you go.

I've been a savage fan for years. And building a gun sounds very attractive. I will check out savageshooters.com and see what I can learn. Thank you very much for the advice.
