Savage 110 fcp 338lm opinions.

So I have chance to pick one of these up. I have a fn spr in 308 I got a smoking deal on used and a guy wants to trade. Anyone have any experience with the fcp in 338 lapua? Goods/ bads?

I have the 110 fcp in 338, good rifle. Shoots sub-moa with decent ammo (I reload). There have been some extractor issues reported, but easy fixes. I have not had one. Muzzle break is very good, kicks less then my 300 WM with no break. Trigger is very good. Added comb for cheek to align better to scope. Have about 300 rounds through it.

I did replace rail with 20 MOA EGW so I can use a Larue QD scope mount. Added Blackhawk rail to swivel for a Atlas bi-pod.

Shot 200 and 600 at Talladaga, rifle is better than my wind reading. Ammo is expensive, to reload about 1.50 a round vs .80 for 300 WM. Purchased 2.60 S&B (pretty decent, I reuse the brass) to over 6 bucks. Can get Lapua on sale for about 50 for 10.

May try bedding stock - it uses HS Precision so pretty nice right out of the box.

I would post this in the gunsmithing section and here is why... Some have experienced performance issues with this cartridge when used on certain actions , some say because there is not enough meat in the tenon area and I would concur.

If I remember correctly , Lilja has an article on their website detailing this exact scenario.

Savage uses a larger shank (tanon) for the 338LM, WSM's and Rums, compared to other cartridges.

That is correct... However you are still left with a rather small amount of "meat" if you will with respect to the case walls and the I.D of the actions tenon area.

Hence why some have had much better luck in this cartridge when opting for an action with a larger tenon.

As far as I know the reason savage uses a large shank on any and all chamberings for anything above a case that has a .4750" back end is because they had too.. You may be fine untill you start stepping on the gas , this is where you start seeing problems.

Good luck , my advice is to do a good amount of research on the matter and be honest with your expectations in said rifle.

I have a Savage 112 Magnum Target that I rebarreled with a McGowen prefit. The reason for swapping out the stock Savage barrel was to gain length and weight with larger diameter muzzle threads; I wanted a 30" long bull profile with .75" threading. The result has been awesome and lots of fun. I regularly shoot the 300g Bergers at 2800 fps using RL33 with Lapua cases and have yet to experience ANY extraction issues. For that matter, I never experienced ANY extraction issues before installing the McGowen. The Savage 338 LM has been a real pleasure while totally meeting my expectations and allowing me to learn what it takes to make hits at 2000+ yards. I would urge anyone to evaluate their NEED for this type of rifle unless they have consistent access to a range that reaches 1500-2500 yards. If you can answer yes, get the rifle and look forward to some good times! If NEED doesn't factor into your decision, get one just the same! :D:)

I've owned two and my buddy has one as well. Not a bad rifle and the extraction issues are only if you use soft brass like Hornady. Stick with Lapua brass and you won't have any issues. I would be interested in knowing how many rounds have been down the pipe though. The .338 Lapua is not known for long barrel life. Also, I always swap out the recoil reducer on any heavy magnums to the JP Recoil Eliminator. Night and day difference over any other recoil reducer I've tried.

Well thanks for all the replys. I had less than 800.00 in the spr.I traded even for the savage with a vortex 30mm scope and a harris bipod with 60 rds of fired brass and 10 rds of loaded ammo. He bought it new and has 60 rds through it. I don't really need it but I can say I have one. I just bought a box of hornadys new 285gr eld bullets going to mess around with it and see how it does. Thanks for all the help guys.
