Savage 110 338 LM

Is the Savage 110 FCP in 338 LM a large shank action? I'm almost ready to go buy one just for the action.

What are you building? There are plenty of other Savage large shank rifles that are a lot cheaper if you're just looking for the action. Also remember that all the Target Actions are large shank.

It is a large shank action... but it is not entirely part-for-part compatible. Unlike most of Savage's Targe Actions, it is a long-action. Unlike most of their regular long-actions, the bolt head is significantly thicker on the .338LM variant. As a result, certain parts - like the firing pin assembly for one - have to be longer to match. Getting all the right parts matched up can be a PITA - its easier to just order a separate entire bolt rather than trying to swap parts around like if you were taking a .308 to a .223 on a short-action.

I am just looking for an action. But to find a long, large, repeater,is not easy. Then finding a nice stock and bottom metal seems to be just as difficult. I measure a 338 LM, and found the lugs to be .120 longer than my Mag bolt head. By the time I get a action, find a stock and bottom metal, I could buy 338 LM and have a switch barrel rig.

This is why I didn't use savage for my last build, to many variables when you need a LONG action large shank.

every barrel maker that sells prechambered threaded Savage barrels told me that the Savage bolt is not big enough around to handle the thrust created by the 338 LM round,,and none would sell me a 338 LM chambered barrel for a Savage action,,even the factory FCP 338LM specific action,,

Bugholes has the Stiller Tac 338 action in stock for 1100$$ and IMO would be the absolute smallest action I would use for a 338 LM.

the 338 RUM and Edge will do just about anything the LM will and fit a standard Magnum boltface,,which will work well in the Savage,,
