Remington 700 338 LM action

Thanks. Still slightly smaller than Remington. That is what I was remembering. --Jerry

Any gun will blow up with an obstruction in the barrel. Even with a .338 the action did not fail in this example.

Yes indeed. The controversy I'm trying to avoid is the dead horse discussion of whether the Rem 700 has enough design margin for this cartridge. As you can see early in this thread, there are many who say not just no but Hell no. I don't want to rehash that discussion here.

The original question is whether there is anything special about the R700 338LM action or is it the same as the R700 30-06 action (except it has 8-40 scope rail mounting holes).

I have both actions in hand and dimensionally they are identical. Nobody on this forum, or a Remington forum I posed on, knows the answer. I do appreciate the knowledge level here. Nobody has posted a BS claim that they know when they don't and have nothing to back up their claim. You would expect this type of response on many gun forums. Speaks very well of our community.

There was reference to an article where the stainless rem 700 actions were experiencing the bottom lug setback with a lapua. The blued/chrome moly actions were harder???and didn't have same problems. I will try to dig it up.

I sent you a pm. It was Kirby Allen who was talking about it. Fifty Driver is his handle on long-range hunting site

Remington is 1.062-16 and Savage large shank 1.120-20 tpi which is larger. The Savage has more lug on the bolt head and it has a closed top like the Target actions.

Yes, I should have been more clear. The tenon of the savage is slightly larger, the barrel butt is slightly smaller. --Jerry

If you have both actions in hand get them tested for hardness and report back to us. That would be a start to answering the question.
