I just picked up a savage 10 precision carbine 223 it has a 20" barrel. My question is would I gain anything by punching it to a 223AI? Rate of twist is 9.

Thanks

I'm not sure if you gain much velocity out of a 20" barrel.
Maybe some guys with Quickload can run some numbers for you

For the added expense to do this it falls in the law of diminishing returns. PLUS BEING THAT IT IS A FACTORY BARREL AND NOT A GOOD QUALITY ONE THAT DOESNT COPPER UP AS MUCH I WOULD WAIT TILL YOU GET TO THE POINT OF CHANGING to a high quality barrel. Sorry hit caps lock.

Far as I'm concerned the AI is always worth having. If the factory barrel is a good one it can be worth re-doing. But when rechambering a factory barrel, take a chamber cast and find out what you have. The AI has less body taper and factory chambers are usually generous, including the neck and especially the freebore. So enough will have to be cut off the back to eliminate all the std. 223 body taper. The new neck will likely be tighter than factory so you'll probably need to re-cut that anyway. And you'll want less freebore anyway. So the barrel will need to be set back enough for those things. With a shouldered barrel it's easiest to just whack off the threads and cut new ones. I have several Savages but haven't rechambered them, only rebarrelled. Is there enough thread on there for the barrel nut when set back? If more thread is necessary, is there enough straight barrel before the taper begins?
