Sand bag rests and aluminum rails

Since I have been selling the Mcmillan made LRB stock for LR BR I have had questions about how to make Aluminum smooth in the bags. First off, aluminum and the 3m slick material just do not get along. Dont even bother with it. If you must, then put stock tape over the aluminum. The best thing to use is cordura with powdered carnuba wax. Sinclair sells it. Slightly better yet is a mix I came up with probably 6-7 years ago when I shot in Florida and humidity made everything sticky which is a 50/50 mix of powder carnuba and ptfe powder. I do not recommend "slick" I recommend smooth. What you want is to be able to gently slide the gun without it feeling grabby or with a "break away" feel. It should just start to slide smooth. Slick like its on bearings does nothing for you except increase recoil and IME seems to add vertical.

Troy,
Edgewood has them.. just mention the LRB stock, they’ll hook you up.

I called last week, and they knew what I wanted, just had to pick a color..

Have you tried anodized?

I have considered it. It will just add cost to the finished product with no real improvements on target. The aluminum slides good on cordura and wax, the problems are when you run the 3m stuff.

I think arrow lube is basically silicone. I used to play with silicone and it was slick, but my favorite is still carnuba wax. It seems to have the right kind of friction. Its smooth not slick if that makes sense.

I currently have a seb neo rest (has 3 piece bag with 3M slick material) and the wheeler lrb stock. Is anyone aware of a cordura replacement for the rest that accomodates the 4 inch forend? In the short term I can put some stock tape on the rails or use a dryer sheet but I am looking for other options too.

Thanks in advance,
JP

I’m wondering if the finish on the alloy being too ‘ polished ‘ can
be an issue too . Higher polish = more surface area to grab on to
whatever it contacts . Maybe a more satin finish of some type with
less surface area contacting the bags is the go ?
