San Gabriel Valley Benchrest Shooters just finished it's 2nd BR School April 9 2006. Our 1st school was August 8 2004. I'm wondering if anybody knows of any more schools coming up. I am already aware the IBS puts on an IBS BR School, nice school. And Tony Boyer gives individual instruction. I would like to know of any other BR Schools in the near future.
San Gabriel is a small BR program averaging 25-30 shooters per shoot. We have a 12 shoot schedule of NBRSA/IBS Shoots. We have two 4 Gun shoots each year, two HV Championship, a SP Championship, an UNL Championship, a Merchandise Shoot, and even a Club Shoot in December.
But the jewell of our Schedule this year is our BR School. Since I am the Shoot Director at San Gabriel I know first hand the planning involved in a BR School. I recommend a BR School to any range for the BR community they serve. Like I said we have done this twice and it was well received both times. We are in So Cal 15 miles east of Pasadena in the San Gabriel foothills above Irwindale. We have had people travel from No Cal, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Indiana to our BR Schools. The gentleman from Indiana was Perry Morton member of the Hall of Fame. It is a tremendous amount of work planning a BR School. The first one I spent a year on it. The second one I spent 6 months. The 2006 BR School was the scary one. Gene my partner in both schools and I watched weather reports for 2 weeks prior to the BR School. Everyday it seemed like it changed between clear sky's to rain. Finally the weather report settled down to clear on Sunday the day of the school and rain on Monday. The weather man was right we had a perfect clear day on Sunday and rain on Monday.
The BR School 2 weeks ago this Sunday was great. We had about 40 Students, 16 Instructors, and 10 or so visitors maybe 20 visitors. We had a lot of well known shooters as our Instructors. Walt Berger, John Loh, Lawrence Weisdorn, Danny Moscaritolo, Tom Libby, Gary Sinclair, Mike Marcelli, Gene DeLoney, Mike Sosenko, Don Nielson, Dennis Thornberry, Lou Murdica, Dave Blazzard, Stephen Perry. Also we had our Range crew instructing but you wouldn't know these guys. I don't want to take the steam out of what Paul will report later on the San Gabriel BR School so I'll stop.
What I'm saying is encourage the range you shoot at to have a BR School. If done right it can be a moneymaker for the Club and give a struggling Club a shot in the arm. As always I am open to discussion. Pictures to follow.
