BR Range Operations
I can only speak for the BR Range I operate. But I have been to many others. I don't have a bad thing to say about other BR ranges, never met a bad one. Trying not be preferential but a few I really like are in no order. St Louis run by Ron Hoehn, Visalia run by Dennis Thornberry, Phoenix run by Gary Ocock & Lester Bruno, not so strange all HOF shooters, Midland the dust of the SW, Raton the beast of the SW, San Gabriel the mission range of So Cal. The rest of the U.S. ranges I have not shot at except Kelbly in 1977 the early years.
Being responsible for a BR operation is no easy task. I am responsible for one BR program. That being San Gabriel. San Gabriel is a nice operation. We have a few settlers from old San Gabriel BR and many new bloods that want to saddle up every month not caring much if UPS is sponsoring the Shoots. I have to remind them today is IBS and NBRSA comes up in a couple months. Kind of like blind mans bluff. Since I call the shots with good advice and support from my shooting brothers we manage to get through each year. No brag just fact San Gabriel has run NBRSA & IBS side by side for 4 years. I take care of the Schedule and do my best to honor both organizations rules and advice. I only take advice as it pertains to Rules. I and my brothers run the Shoot operations at San Gabriel BR as it is done at most Ranges. We use our moving backers at all shoots and stationary backers at IBS shoots. The San Gabriel range is on a year by year lease. This year we appling for a 2 year lease. More on that in another Thread.
Schedule
I assumed responsibility of San Gabriel operations in 1997 mainly because nobody wanted it and our young bloods weren't here yet. My first item was to come up with a schedule that fit our shooters. By 1997 our base had dwindled to 7 and all we knew was LV/HV every month with a UNL agg thrown in at the end of the year. Now several of us were regulars at Visalia & Phoenix so we knew we could do more at San Gabriel. I got concerned we would lose our 12 month schedule with the gun club if things didn't pick up. I've told this story many times but I'll shorten this time. Lou Murdica and I came up with a plan to register San Gabriel shoots with the NBRSA. It worked and San Gabriel has never had a Shoot problem since.
Our current Schedule is the best for a small Range I have ever seen. Of course I can say that because I make it that way. When I say Small we have 20 benches 100 yds only but we have had this year 5 NBRSA, 5 IBS, BR School, 1 Club Shoot featuring Cruiser/HV. Of the 5 NBRSA we have a 4 Gun, a HV Championship, UNL/HV, and a Merchandise Shoot. The Mercahndise Shoot is open to any NBRSA/IBS registered shooter. Here I take all our surplus money from Registered Shoots and buy BR items. It has been a highlight of our program for the last 4 years. Probably $20,000+ in merchandise over the last 4 years. Of course that includes the generous donations we received. It all goes one way or another. The extra money we made at the BR School will be added to the offerings. We are a non-profit club so I make sure we have no profit at the end of the year except for the extra hundred I hold out to start the new season. Also we have had a couple seasons of barrel drawings. One year we gave away 4 Krieger barrels. If we get our lease extension we will have another barrel drawing tickets to San Gabriel shooters only and are $2 each.
Our IBS program has been going 4 years now. San Gabriel wants to be part the whole BR world in our Country. This was joint decision of myself and my trusties to boost our program. I feel it has worked our attendance gets closer to a 30 average all the time and for some strange reason most or our 30+ shoots are our IBS shoots. We dual registered for a year giving us 14 Registered shoots twice of the average BR range. That got dicey as both organizations got territorial. I'm not one to get between 2 pit bulls so now we give a piece to both. Sure got a lot of press in the BR world after that year. This year our IBS schedule has a SP/SP Gene DeLoney appreciation shoot, 4 Gun, Calif HV Championship, 5 shot HB Championship. Our Merchandise Shoot will next year be Registered IBS. Actually the Merchandise money and donations come from both the NBRSA&IBS shoots.
Range Protocol
Things we do at San Gabriel. We fly our Countries flag and play the anthem before each shoot. We always use 3 referees. We weigh all guns each time except UNL/HB. We draw benches and rotate when the rules dictate we need to. I as Shoot Director run the shoots with 2 iron fists. Luckily all the shooters are my buds. I run minimal help. We have a RO/Measurer, a Stat/Webmaster shooter, best in the country as far as I'm concerned, and 1 target kid that does the rest. We have a range operation director shooter, a special projects director shooter, and a NBRSA shoot reporter shooter. We are fortunate to be part of the IBS web which I feel is the best in BR. I think we are a well run group and I in no way make all the decisions. Rates $30/shoot. NBRSA membership good for all Registered Shoots, for IBS shoots an IBS membership is good. December Club Shoot which is wide open.
Trophies
We give our normal 11 trophies each Shoot. Trophies for agg placers, sg's, 2 guns. On larger shoots notably our 4 guns we give trophies to 5th place. We also give IBS shooting patches. We have recognized San Gabriel's shooter accomplishments for yearly shooting SOY at SG and in the SW Region, we have stolen the show in SW Region SOY so far, and also long time participation in San Gabriel benchrest. The San Gabriel Range buys our NBRSA targets we buy our IBS targets. Rates $30/shoot.
Contacts
I have 100+ e-mails names in San Gabriel BR group where I keep our shooters in touch with what we do at San Gabriel. Not a lot of grandstanding maybe once in a while. All the San Gabriel contacts are in the WebSite below.
I could go on but who wants to, you can see more of us at www.sgbenchrest.com.
