Sako vs. M-16 vs. Remington extractors???

I keep hearing guys referring to Sako extractors on their Remington rifles. Some like them and some don't. Others refer to an "M-16" type extractor.

What are these? Why are they better or worse then another type?

Thanks everyone!

Sako version provide much more positive extraction than Remington's original. The downside is that they require a slot to be milled in the side of the bolt. If you like, I can e-mail pics.

The M16 extractor is much like the Sako only larger and requiring a much larger and deeper slot cut in the bolt body.

It's not that the Sako and M16 extractor cuts weaken the bolt to a point of being unsafe. Obviously, if they did the Sako Rifles and M16/AR rifles would be likewise weakened. The down side is that the extractors line up with the locking lug raceway on a remington M700 and if there was a situation where the extractor blew out it could conceivably travel down the raceway into the shooters face or right side of his head.

There's no doubt that this could happen but I've never seen a shooter with a Sako extractor in his ear so maybe the danger isn't as great as some, more caustios, shooters would have us believe.

Now, you'll probably hear from some of them.:nono:

Sending the extractor down the lug raceway sort of makes sense. I didn't understand the reluctance of some shooters to get this mod.

Worst case I could see, is part of the metal coming back into the bolt shroud. I just don't see it coming out and biting me so, I guess I'm sort wondering what all the fuss is about.

And, THANKS for the pictures!

You're right. The shroud would probably deflect it. That is partly what the shroud is for - a safety measure. But, the anti-Sako extractor guys will say that it is better to be safe. Personally, I think you can carry safety to extremes. I have Sako extractors in three of my Remingtons.

They do blow out through the loading port. Over the years there have been posts about folks that have had the extractors driven into their shoulder. The saddest post was mention of a left-handed shooter that was blinded in one eye when shooting a Rem with a Sako extractor.
You have no control over the rifle after it leaves your possesion, nobody lives forever.
Yes, I still have several M700s with Sako style extractors but I'll never do another one for me or anybody else.

If all those folks that have problems with using a Sako style extractor will keep there handloads to safe and sane pressures they wouldn't have to worry about a extractor sticking out of their ear.......
