Sako .243

great rifle ,,,,the bbl is 10 twist so be shure and use Berger 90 gr BT bullets with a max charge of RX-16 and you will be pleased,,,,I have used Rx-15 with this bullet for years but find the Rx-16 to be even better,,,Roger

Ill kill this some. Beautiful gun, fabulous action. Wish I could get these actions to buy, for as cheap as a rem 700 action.

I had a sako 85 in 243 and could never get it to shoot... best groups were 1 inch at 100 yards to 1.5 inches... I got so frustrated I sent it back in because they guarentee 1 moa accuracy... yep you guessed it... it shot 1 moa... IE slightly larger than 1 inch, and they called it good... I ended up selling it.

I had a sako 85 in 22-250... it shot lights out! My father in law bought it from me because he wanted it, and I wanted to play with 22-250AI.. This gun was fabulous, no regrets on buying...

Moral of the story.. They are hit and miss. It depends on if you get a good barrel.

I tried 80gr, 90 gr, 95gr, 100gr, 105gr... I tried it all... several different powders too.. primers.. I wasted a good bit of money trying... sierras, bergers, hornady.. I promise I tried..

edit - I think I tried other gr bullets than that too...

I got rid of it and spun up a 6XC because I was tired frustrated and hated the 243 after that... 6XC and havent looked back since.. just all been my experience...

sounds like a valiant effort,,,,I have had some that wont shoot also,,,thanks for the response,,,Roger

I have no problem shooting 55 grainers in my 8" twist so it would make sense to make all 243win's with 8" twists, that way you can shoot all bullets up to 108 gr.

10" twist is marginal for 90 gr hamBergers.

Agree with sniperr228, factory offerings are a hit or miss but you're chances of a miss with a Sako are reduced, a lot.

I'm a big fan of the 243 unlike many on this site. I've own many over the past 40 years, mostly with 10" twists.

My first choice for varmints would the the Sierra 80 Blitz with IMR 4064. This combo shot well in every 243 I've ever owned and is a great choice for long range varmint hunting.

Another great bullet with this powder is the 80 grain Nosler BT.

A great all around bullet is the 85 Sierra BTHP which can be used for varmints and deer the latter with careful shot placement.

Sako 85s are nice rifles. There is a gun dealer called accuflite rifles who specializes in Sakos, I think he has something like 500+ actions laying around for builds. He’s built me a couple customs and speaks highly of the model 85. If it was me I would be more attracted to an older Sako, a deluxe pre Garcia in 243 is one the purest bolt actions ever made. Good luck on the pursuit.

I have a 22-250 pre Garcia and agree, they are awesome. Accuflite is the go to source for actions, but they were too expensive for my taste...nice to work with however.

When were they pre-Garcia.

I have a Forester(243) that I bought in 1967 or 68.. Does that qualify??
