Safe Moving?

Has anyone bought a safe as big as this, and moved it themself, with a decent appliance dolly? I think I would pick one up in a rental van, then carefully push it to the edge of the back door opening (with my wife), just getting it at the balance point, letting it pivot to the ground into the garage. After that, I only have to get it on the dolly, then into my entrance door in the garage which has about a 4-6" step up. From there it is about a 10-15 ft journey on that basement floor to where it will remain.

If your wife understands directions like mine does you will be on your ass and then the safe will be on your ass faster than you can say WTF.

FYI ... you’ll need to bolt the safe to the floor to keep it from tipping forward when you swing open the door. You may also want to space the safe up off the floor to allow air circulation beneath the safe. Goggle ‘safe installation tips’ for more info. I had a team of two install my 750 lb safe and bolt it the the floor. Cost me $250 three years ago and included bolting it to the floor. From when they arrived in my driveway to when they pulled away was @25 minutes (yep .. I timed it). This included me working the combo and open/close the safe twice before they left. They vacuumed the floor from the drilling dust and took all cardboard and packing stuff with them.

My safe weighs 1000 pounds empty. The door weighs 350 pounds. My two boys and I have moved it two times. First we remove the door using a 2x4 as a lever to lift it off. A good hand truck handles the door easily. We lay the box on a four wheel dolly on its back. The boys tip it back and I position the dolly under the box. The dolly is maybe 8 inches off the ground. Strap the box to the dolly and one person can roll it anywhere (level). We use an electric winch to roll it up the ramp into my cargo trailer. Easy.

I had professional movers move it once. Two young guys in really good shape. They strapped it to a two a stout hand truck with the door in place. It had to go down around the house to a walk out basement. They decided to take it down the grass beside the concrete steps. Well it had its way with them and it ended up sliding down the grass slope. Nobody got hurt and the safe was fine. Way too exciting for me.

The other thing you need to know is some safes locking mechanisms have a tamper proof glass plate in them and if the glass breaks while you are moving it, because you don't know what your doing, you will be calling out a lock smith and it will cost you a lot more than it would have cost to move it in the first place.

I bought 2 10' lengths of 1" steel gas pipe cut it into 3 lengths ea. For a total of 6. Once you get the front edge up on the first it's very easy to move it where you want. Butches golf balls would be interesting to try too. Good luck, Barry.

As an option, I emailed a local safe mover asking if he could move a safe for me on a Saturday. His reply was essentially "you need to buy that safe so you can see if I will deliver it on a Saturday". I wonder if he is really a Democrat.
