Sabots in 30-30

Tried some of the .30 cal sabots from EABCO, like the old Remington Accelerators. Loaded them with .224 55 gr Hornady SP over IMR 4198 per load data sheet. Shot them out of Winchester 94 in 30-30. Tried six different loads. Started at 50 yds, and couldn’t hit a paper plate. Moved up to 25 and finally hit the plate. They were shooting a bit high, so moved back to 50 and held lower. None of the six loads would put all 5 shots on a plate. I have never shot something so inaccurate.

Somewhat surprising since my Savage 220 will put three shots of Remington 20 ga accutips touching at 100 yds.

And this Winchester 94 will easily keep all the shots on a plate at 100 yds with any standard 150gr bullet.

So, anyone have good experience with these sabots? Curious if other powder or loading techniques would improve.

I have never tried those but cannot see them working well. That 30 -30 was more than likely designed to push a 13p-150 grain bullet, not a 55 grain bullet and 10 grain sabot. I had a friend years ago that had a 30-06 with those and it shot for shit as well.

Did the old Remington accelerator factory load shoot?

He told me they did not. I list touch with years ago and am just going of of what he said.I could not even tell you what gun he tried them in. I remember seeing the box and asking him about it and his reply. Other than that I dont know. As far as shotguns and in lines using them yes some do extremely well others do ok at best. I ran an 11-87 12 slugger for a few years on a factory remington rifled barrel.
The cheap ass federal fusion slugs are what that shot the best. Under 9 bucks a box of 5. The real shame was buying the multiple boxes of other brands and styles at 20 and above a box of 5 just to be disappointed. My tc omega shooting blackhorn 209 powder with a 250 tc shock wave hold 3 to 4 inch groups at 200 if I am on a rest. But the reality of me shooting at a deer like that off hand and holding down my elmer fudd jitters is slim to none.

Years ago I read an article about the massive learning curve Remington experienced while developing the Accelerator rounds. All the standard rules and practices went out the window. Without specific loading data I wouldn't bother with it.

When i was a kid everybody had some but we all understood them to be for finishing off a wounded deer at point blank range- not suitable for actually using for a first shot

Very specific load data provided....

This is just a fun winter project, with the hopes to have a load to kill a yote or two using the 30-30 Win. I have many more suitable rifles for the job.

Years ago a friend of mine tried the original Accelerator factory loads in both a .30-06 and a .30-30. Both were an abysmal failure. I never tried them or heard of anyone having any luck.

I don't know why... but for some reason it just occurred to me that shooting sabots out of a .300 Blackout might be kinda fun ;)

No experience with .30-30 sabots, but about 10 years ago I found some sabots that would let you load a .224 diameter bullet in a .30-06 case, which would mimic a handloaded Accelerator. I tried loading them fast, slow and with various powders and the results were truly pitiful. I never shot any factory Accelerators, so can't add anything about them.

Interesting how many of you say that the Accelerator rounds were never accurate, I used them in my .308 Win rifle and had no problem shooting jack rabbits on a regular basis.

It is strange that shotgun sabots are in principle the same thing and they can shoot very accurately. Here is Remington 20ga accu-tip with the sabot and 45 cal 260gr bullet. These are tack drivers in a savage 220, so I find it hard to believe the concept is hopeless.

I’m going to try a slower powder like BLC2, and maybe I’ll have to find more old factory accelerators to compare with my handloads.
