SA or LA suggestions

I’ve got a question for you 6mmRem/6AI guys. I know most recommend going with a long action for a build based on this cartridge. However, I have a stiller predator short action on hand. The possible 6AI build will be a sporter weight build, finished rifle ~9lbs with scope) mostly for coyotes/varmints and the occasional whitetail, just cause), I want it to be a repeater.

I plan shooting mostly v-max’s,more than likely the 87’s) with the occasional 100gr deer pellet. The longer VLD pills will probably never find its way in gun. I know I may give up a little case capacity loading to magazine length. My question is; with the shorter bullets will I be good on the short action or should I go through with a 22-250AI build, what I bought the Stiller for) and go 6AI in a future LA ground up build where it can shine…???

Any input would be appreciated as well as recommended freebore if we are green with the 6AI…

Thanks in advance

Good luck on shooting the 87's, I don't have a rifle that likes them yet...
You will be better served with using your action for the 22/250AI and locating a LA for the 6mm AI especially if you want to use it as a repeater..

I have 2 6mm AI's both built on Remington short action repeaters. The longest bullet I shoot is the 87 Vmax and they both work fine with the short action. A side note is I have a wyatt box on both and I do use the extra .110 to get out to the lands. As long as you stay away from the heavy VLD's the short action should work fine. I know you can use a wyatt box on the Stiller repaeter without modification as well.

Thanks for the replies.

I was just wishing with the 87's. They are the only thing,I've found yet) that my 6BR won't shoot great. There is plenty of good .243" bullets that will suffice.

Decisions, decisions.... I've had the action 8 months & haven’t sent it off cause I can't pic a chamber :rolleyes:

Coleridge,

THe Sa will be fine. I had 2 6AI on Rem SA. You may have to pull the bolt for a loaded round. The 243 AI may be a good choice. You get about the same speed with a shorter round, better brass to boot.
My Hall action has a small port. I may add a 243AI barrel to it. It will come out better than a 6AI.

Send it to me, it'll have a good home here. I for-see 6AI and 22-250AI barrels...:D

Coleridge,

Go with the 6mmAI. I am shooting the 87 Vmax @ 3580 FPS and it is a consistent .5 moa shooter. Tips the yotes over real good.

I had my first 6Rem AI build on a short action wanting to shoot 95/100gr bullets I do have to seat the bullets in alittle more than I like. My 2nd one I used a long action and just had a 243AI build on a Rem short action great rifle working up some loads with Berger 80gr and the 87gr V-Max. I've also have a 22-250AI and I don't think you want a Wyatt magazine box as you have to mill alittle on the action and mod bolt stop that could hurt the resale value.

I would do the 6RemAI on a long action reason for that you can take full advantage of the case capacity seating the bullets out alittle further. On the short action 22-250AI/243AI etc. Well good luck
