Victory or Defeat?

I’m claiming victory. Do you think I should or not? Here’s the deal.

We have to go back to June 30 when I got the pumpkin eater and my story “Success – Or Dumb Luck”.
After I shot that one, I drove over to the second field to see if I could spot the other hog that the farmer says has been eating pumpkins there too. It was maybe twenty minutes at most when the hog in question shows up at the back of the field, about 175 yards from where I sitting in my truck. It’s around 7 in the evening. I put the crosshairs of the Savage on him and pull the trigger. He runs off. :-\

Now you know and I know that hogs run off all the time when shot. I will admit that I did not go check it out cause I’d have to trample some hay and probably some pumpkins, so I decided to bail. I should have fessed up to the “miss”, but didn’t. Just figured I’d get another chance at a later time. ;)

Well I’ve been back several more times and set up on him/her at different times of the day and it’s been a no show each and every time, including this morning. :o

I say I got it and should claim victory. I’ll let you decide. ;D

No "corpus delicti", no body count!!

He's off for a few weeks, visiting the local painted floozies ;) ;) ;)

He's of to the golf course to play a few rounds With Bill and Rodney. Is there any doubt in your mind that you got em? I'd say he's toast.

No gimmes in this game. If you can't anchor them they don't count, unless you got blood and/or guts! They shouldn't be running anywhere with a decent hit at a decent range with a .22-250. Try a V-Max or A-Max bullet. I shoot the 75 gr. A-Max out of my .223 and anywhere in the boiler room is DRT. The .30 caliber 110 gr. V-Max out my 7.62X39 at only 2600 fps is still extremely destructive.

I would say he or she is off to the local army and navy store to get a new flak jacket. These animals are not dumb.Once they are shot at,some of them abandon their den and move on. The chuck is probably home right now watching tv and making some hot buttery pop corn and baking a nice pumpkin pie. Wiat a week or so,and if it survived maybe it will come back for the battle of the bulge replay. Watch out though,it may have reinforcements and try to outflank your position.

Check with Varmint Hunter and their 500/100 yard and longer awards. You must have it in hand (or picture) for it to count.

Been there and done that on both chucks and prairie dogs. Those chucks are tough buggers. Anchor or drift. Only the anchor counts.

Keep trying.

BE CAREFUL I think he is massing forces for a counter attack. Clearly this one clever and sinister varmint and he could attack from any direction. He is likely to form alliances with PETA ,Obama,Save the whales.org,and the Democratic party. When he comes he is likely to try and disarm you first, and then all I can say is that you may be converted into a vegetarian, homosexual liberal!!!
I never understood the danger until I studied that classic of warfare strategy----

They are great tree climbers and would be able to align with tree huggers comfortably. "Death from above" may be their motto. You must consider a larger gun! ::)

absolutely not!
he just ran for one of these, thats what you're gonna get for a non DRT!
what bullet you running not to blow him apart at a measley 175yds?

you better start going to that field a different way. he probably knows which noise is your truck, which way to listen for it, etc. He's gone before you get there. I bet if you went in on foot one day, you would probably see more around than just him. go to the field a different way. If that doesn't work, you could always ride the tractor into the field. they seem to know they are safe when it's a tractor. I figured that out a long time ago raking hay. I mounted a gun case on the side of that old international. The landowner asked what it the world I was going that morning, on my way out to the field. My response was "you want em dead or not?" he said dead and I was off. when he came out to bail it, he just looked at me, shook his head, and gave me a thumbs up. (I made sure they were all belly up in plain sight). point is change it up!

I had one run into his hole one time after I rolled him at 600 yards. When we got to where he was sitting when I shot at him there was his liver laying on the ground. Well, I counted him, but you can't count the others. Ground hogs move around a lot. One ground hog might have 7 or 8 holes. There's a good chance he just moved. No body, No count. Even hair and blood can't be counted. Sometimes they heal up, even if you hit him, that doesn't mean you killed him. Ground hogs are tuff.

Lots of good advice too! ;D

Tough crowd for sure!! ;)

My brother and I battle all year on the groundhog count. They must be "confirmed" with phone photo proof and location to count.
