S&W 14-3 Help needed!

Dang shortgrass,my trigger finger just started curling up....

Wham,wham,wham,wham,wham,wham
I'll probably keep this one, as it 1 of 2 that I built when I attended a class taught by Ron Powers. She'll stack wadcutters like nobodies business. It has been some time since I had a call for a revolver like this one. On some, I made a rail type scope mount for a "red dot" or similar optic. I still have all the tools and a sight jig specifically for revolvers. I occasionally get to 'slick up' a S&W or make a repair such as worn cylinder stop or cylinder timing and the occasional broken hammer stud, or D & T a Blackhawk for optics mounting. But, PPC guns like this one, are about a thing of the past. And, to be honest, I didn't learn a whole lot new when I took that revolver course (and I DID pay attention!) that hadn't already been well covered in the gunsmith school curriculum. Basic mechanics......

Page 211 of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 4th Edition mentions a single action only variation but nothing that I see about a double action only variation. Barrel lengths offered were 6" and 8⅜". Are you relying on what the owner told you or did you try it yourself?
Exactly what I was thinking Ken, I'm thinking the hammers are available though. I recently sold an 8 3/8 14-3 for $650. I of course hope I didn't sell it too cheap but I remember buying it for $375 probably 15 yrs ago. It was nice all over but had an ugly rust spot on the bbl that I have no way of knowing how it got there.

Here's my DA only Smith. Model 64-6. I guess you'd basically call it a stainless Mod 10. JG had these cheap for awhile, and I wish I'd got a bunch of them. Would have been a great investment. I think I paid 20 bucks extra for the hand select option on this one, and the price was still around 200 bucks.

I think these were police or security department returns from public or private service stock. Maybe someone else knows better than I. jd

Los Angeles Police Department issued 6 inch Model 14s. Maybe they had the DA only. S&W did that kind of stuff for large departments.

A buddy of mine ordered one of them, and didn't want to pay the 20 dollar hand select fee. This is how his came. -- both sides. jd

All I have is a model 10 4 inch hb I have, one with a trigger job and a Bomar rib and one is new never fired.

My #2 son wanted a "house gun" a few,5? years ago. Nothing fancy, just dbl action 38.

Found a #10 HB 4" "trade in" at Bud's on the cheap. Bought it,came nearly mint. Also at my suggestion,he contacts the Tyler folks and orders one of their T grips. The fixed sights hit dead on @25yds with std velocity 158's with uncanny accuracy.

I tried to buy it from him a year ago..... he started laughing and walked away....still laughing. He's the guy that buys one raffle ticket and wins a 50" flatscreen,we all hate him(jk).

Here's my #14. Don't know or care what "dash".... it dosen't have the hole in the side plate. Bought with less than a box of 50 through it. Won't say how much $ cause it was a borderline, "goin to H*ll" for that deal. Hey,the guy didn't know what it was other than,"it isn't a 357"..... I said X,he said sold.

Since the model 10 heavy barrel has been mentioned would y’all remind me what dash numbers those were. I was remembering even numbers like 10-6, 10-8.

Hi Ken. I have the gun.I opened it up and looked at the hammer. No notch. It has a very smooth pull but Double action only. I pull the hammer back with my thumb and it doesn’t catch. I innocently told the guy I thought it was broken and would need to be fixed.

“I don't understand why anyone would modify the revolver for double action only since it fires double action without modification and nothing is gain by modifying for double action as far as I know.”
It has me scratching my head, too!
The gun feels tight and doesn’t look abused, just neglected. Some holster rubbing the blue off in spots.
I’d shoot lite wadcutter loads in it or snakeshot “rattler killers”. I had the opportunity to shoot one of these guns as a kid. I’ve some fond memories. This one just fell in my lap.

I have modified a 686 to double action only to met NRA Action pistol Production rules. If the revolver had single action ,then it had to meet a 3.5 LBS single action weight limit...if no single action then there was no minimum trigger weight.

I hate dumb rules.
Tom

I found some real good info on the s&w forum when I was looking about for my 357 & 22 pre war pistols.
Might try that.

Here's one more, only with my shop made rail scope mount. TDSCF1107.JPG he barrel profile is a bit smaller, also, and 5" instead of 6". You can tell my under lugs are shop made as no two I do the same.

IMO, the s&w forum is "ate up" with guys that think a spring kit is a trigger job. Then they wonder why they get no, or spotty ignition.

I believe that the dash number is just a designation of the base model series production run. For instance -2 covers all the production of that model for a period of years/months, and then they make a change in design, and move to -3. And I don't think the -# changes with the barrel length or type.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. jd

The dash number signifies an engineering change.
