Rust , rust everywhere!!

Call me ignorant, but I have never had to clean rust off of a firearm before. Newer Remington plastic stock el-cheapo. Covered in rust. What do I use to clean it? I pulled a bunch off using patches wet with BORE TECH, but it's obviously not meant for that.

Thanks,
Tod

A plastic stock that rusted?
No...but it seems that the bluing on the cheap guns is different than a top end gun. It doesn't seem like blueing....it is a black finish on the metal. Should have explained it better....my bad....just trying to explain the metal finish by saying the rest of the gun is cheap.

Eezox. Or Eez Ox.

I’ve used it on the parkerized looking Remingtons. Seems to keep everything stable after wiping down the entire rifle. Never have run it through the bore. I was turned onto it by a mil surp collector.

I think though, that once rust begins, it never really ends. Those cheaper rifles would have benefited from an oil bath after the finish was applied.

How and where do you store the rifle when not using it? The gun may seem cheap, but it’s usually its environment and/or care of it that cause it to rust.
My in-laws stored a couple old hand me down guns under their bed in plastic gun cases that rusted over time even when oiled. I got most of it off but not perfect. IIRC I soaked it in kroil or something similar to loosen the rust.

Look this up on the internet for Rust removal. Kroil Oil, comes in a spray aerosol or liquid state. Apply a little on the bottom of your Bbl near the recoil lug. Pick up some four (OOOO) Steel Wool. The four ot Steel Wool will not scratch your surface because it so fine. But, just to calm your mind that it won't that's why I suggested to start on the bottom of your Bbl near the recoil lug. Apply a little Kroil Oil and use a small size piece of the
four ot Steel Wool. Rub this area with the SW, then use a paper towel to wipe off to clean. Once you see how well this works, continue to work the rest of your Rifle!

All the best from here.

There's a pad from Big 45 Frontier that looks like it would be death to any kind of firearms finish - it isn't. The coarse Brillo-looking pad is harmless to bluing, and removes rust like nobody's business. I highly recommend it, but if you have to order it, it may take too long. Available from the mfr, or on Amazon.

LOLOL,,,,,,the gun IS NOT MINE,,,I am cleaning a few guns for people. Make a little extra cash for all those Fed 210 and 215 match primers that I can't find.

My guns don't get rust....that is why I don't know how to clean it....never had to.

I have a 12fv savage, looks like new, put rem oil on a paper towl and wipe it down, red/orange rust comes off. Like its in the pores of the black nitride/blueing finish. I assume using any steel wool would polish the flat black finish.

Good topic.

Had that happen with a buddies 700ADL with the cheesy plastic stock, a Big Box store special with the fabulous 3-9x duplex glass on it. Prior to working up loads for him a detailed strip and clean revealed a fair bit of rust below the stock line. Got a green scotch brite pad from the kitchen, added a bit of light oil and scrubbed it all off, then hosed all exterior metal down with CRC-400, its a wax basically, and very durable stuff. I imagine boat wax works well too.

This guy uses/used a copper penny, a copper scrub pad and steel wool (5:45 mark)

I would think some oil with copper wool would work well also (but I have no experience with removing rust)

Trying to gain some knowledge for possible future use ..... just in case I may need it.

I’ve been applying Cerakote for 10 years now and have done many new Remingtons.
They rust and I’ve had a few that has discolored under Cerakote especially FDE.
Still Cerakote is the best alternative to the Remington crap finish.
