Is This Rust?

So I'm pretty meticulous when it comes to keeping my guns clean and preserved, and after searching for the best rust preventative I ran across the 6mmbr's bore cleaning method and started following it: I clean with Hoppe's Elite, patch it dry, then let Wipe Out soak overnight, patch the barrel dry, and then push a patch of Eezox through the barrel instead of the RemOil I used to use.

I took my Savage 10 out yesterday and did not patch out the barrel before heading to the range, which I understand is okay with Eezox. After 25 rounds, I let the Hoppe's soak overnight and the patches looked like this. This isn't rust inside the barrel is it?

I don't have anyone in my area to ask, so I appreciate any advice y'all have to offer.

Thanks!

while common rust looks red,red/brown, various chemicals can cause strange colors to show up.

i'd say fix the cause, not the symptom...change your cleaning/storage plan

It is a carbon steel barrel. I was shooting Federal 175gr Sierra BTHP. I store it in a large gun safe with silica humidity boxes and do not let the hygrometer rise above 55% before recharging the silica in the oven.

I'm going to pull another rifle I haven't fired and see how it patches out. It's been cleaned with the same procedure.

The reason I changed my cleaning was because I was tired of spending half a day cleaning the darn things and the Wipe Out seemed to offer the best solution. If the other rifle patches out reddish brown, I suppose I'll just go back to cleaning solely with Hoppe's Elite and Rem Oil as the rust-preventative.

Personally I would change the chemicals and start using something better like Montana copper killer and you could start with butches to get the carbon out then use marvel mystery oil to protect the bore.If you didn't catch it,the daily bulletin had a study on rust preventatives and eezox didn't fair real well in my opinion. Eezox was in the older review some time ago.

So I went and patched out three other rifles on which I've used the exact same cleaning method and no reddish/brown result. As you can see in the picture, the first row was the patch out and the second row is the re-applying of Eezox in each of the three rifles.

The blue patch picture is the reason I use the method I use from the 6mmbr article. That Wipe Out had only sat in the barrel for about an hour or so, and I don't have to concern myself with ammonia pitting the steel.

If you'll notice the top of the Eezox can, the old liquid has a slight reddish color to it. It seems to me that quite possibly since I didn't patch out the barrel before shooting it, there may have been a chemical reaction with the Eezox coating and the powder causing the reddish color. The only other variable is that the Savage is the only barrel with Carbon Steel; the others are stainless and chrome lined. it just makes no sense, from my layman's point of view, that one barrel would produce that color results and the others not without the previous explanation.

thanks for all the input so far in this

JonBearMan, is this the bulletin to which you were referring?

http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2014/05/anti-corrosion-products-test-video-reveals-best-rust-blockers/

That latest test didn't have Eezox as part of the test but it referenced the older post and Eezox was on top.

thanks.

Not that this is cause of your problem but I never shoot with anything in the barrel.....I always run a dry patch through the bore prior to leaving for the range, as well as a large patch to make sure the chamber is dry.

I can NEVER remember to do that. Maybe I should put a big note on my range bag reminding me to do so.

Don't worry about Wipeout. It's one of the best cleaners on the market. I've. Used it for about a year and have never had a problem, period! I 'scope my barrels, regularly and have never observed a speck of rust. Also, its absolute hell on copper fouling! When I finish cleaning I patch it out with Kroil for corrosion protection.

I think I'll just stick with the procedure I'm currently using; the other bores showed zero problems as per the pictures and its the method recommended by 6mmbr. After cleaning this bore, I'll take it to the local gunsmith and have them scope it and let me know if there are any problems of which I need to be aware.

Racesnake, I agree about Wipe Out. That stuff is amazing on copper with zero scrubbing and brushing. You just have to let the product work.

Thanks for the feedback from everyone.

I am pretty sure that the Hoppes Elite that you left in overnight is water based. I have some that I don't use for this reason.

+1 on the grease or oil comment. i get this a lot if i get a bit heavy on the grease on my lugs. i use wipeout for the same reason as the op and some congentional brushing with a solvent then letting wipeout sit in there for an hour works great for me and saves me a lot of time on cleaning. in the end the patches come out just as clean with 1/3rd the effort.
