Rust prevention

Down here in the SE US the humidity is fearsome, so rust is a problem. After reading an article on this site about the durability of various gun finishes, Duracote/Cerakote (sp) seemed to be the winners. Our gun club manager does a fair amount of painting with these products, so I took a couple dies that had a little rust on them to him & asked that the next time he was painting to run my dies. He did a nice job of it & I haven't seen any more rust in years, and have had all my non-SS dies done since. Of course this is for the outside only. For the inside I would just use the product of your choice from the many good recommendations in this thread.

Won't hurt to put a few dessicant chips in the die boxes

I keep all mine in conditioned space

Never understood dessicant bags. If they absorb water vapor how come they don't increase in weight? Even if they worked they would quickly max out and quit working.

I was involved with an Army study of various long term storage anti rust oils for the Army. One thing I learned was rust can occur under an oil coating. Make sure there is no moisture on the part before coating. Spraying a part with carburator cleaner cools a surface and it might cause a tiny amount of water on the surface.

I have a 2.5' x 3' plastic storage bin filled with various products for rust, lubrication, cleaning and whatnot. I have imposed a moratorium on any new purchases until either that box is relatively empty or they take me out of the house in a body bag, at which point my wife can dispose of the products as well as my body.

I have moved from Kroil as a rust preventer to the Hornady one shot cleaner and lubricate.
