Rust prevention

I have never had this problem .. I did live in the Chicago and now in the Middle of Oregon.
I would think ATF os Hydraulic oil would be good ? (high anti-rust level)
I work in a Machine Shop years back. There was a Italian Guy that we called Mr. Rust.
If he ran a Mill or Lathe the next day the handles were Rust.. He had a high acid level in his system.

Ballistol.....rust prevention is one of it's many uses in the reloading room. Also works well as a brass lube before resizing as well as carbon remover. Not as good as Bore tech C4 for carbon but I will put it up against anything for rust prevention.

I use it to clean my brass at the range. Use it as a sizing lube on my small BR cases. I also wipe down my rifles with it. Love that smell. Really different. That stuff has been around a long time.

On the Ballistol...after reading about its virtues on this site, I bought a bottle, and after smelling the contents, gave it away. For me, no product was worth putting up with that smell. Different strokes..

I hear you on the stink. I think Kroil is the absolute worst. Now Hoppe's #9, the old stuff, was intoxicating. :D

Yep. still have a bit left and it's my goto firearm corrosion prevention. It'd be good for dies too.
Is the new formula any good for anti corrosion ?

On Florida's East Coast everything rusts unless you coat it with something
I use car wax ( without the compound in it )
Use it on all reloading equipment
Also use it on my guns
Easy to find easy to use and not expensive

Today was my day to go thru the safe, checking and cleaning all long rifles. As the last step, I used the Shooters Choice anti-corrosion spray, running 2 wet patch's down each barrel and a light spray on bolts. Also added a reminder tag to each with date and a warning to clean prior to firing.

Stored them muzzle down with two Goldenrods running. In the rifles I shoot often, just a single patch of Kroil protects them, short term.

BreakFree "CO" aka "Collector" The best I've found. The military likes it also. It's designed for long term storage.

A good "last wipe" oil might be Marvel Air Tool Oil. It's similar to common MMO, and is a penetrant, but has a slight sulphurous odor on top of the familiar wintergreen. Some model airplane guys swear by it as "after-run" oil in glow (nitromethane) engines, to prevent internal corrosion.

I suppose you guys are familiar with product testing. Here is a fairly comprehensive test of many different products.
If you cannot tolerate seeing your favorite so called rust preventative fail the corrosion test do not view this.
If you are willing to see the products that lasted the longest and protected the best then proceed. For the most part your favorite anti rust products FAILED. So you have been warned.

One of the top references on corrosion is Corrosion Engineering by Mars G. Fontana, Phd.
the late Dr Fontana was one of the world's foremost authorities on corrosion prevention.

ireload2, Thanks for posting Ron's extensive testing. It was a real eye opener. It seems like most products do the job on our well protected firearms. As for hunting rifles, often subjected to extended rain and temperature fluctuations for long periods, this testing was extremely valuable. I now have a better understanding of which products work best for my needs. No more trial and error for me. My hat's off to Ron for his project.

Hi Willie,
I am glad you found that useful. I think it is a valuable test. If nothing else it is a clue that the ASTM, ASME and other standards organizations have a wide array of scientifically based performance tests that will yield valid comparisons.

Many of our favorite products fell flat compared to a few top performers. I have used Birchwood Casey Barricade (formerly called Sheath) for about 3 decades with great satisfaction yet it was not in the top group. My conclusion is that my keeping everything indoors in air conditioned space has done most of the rust protection.
