russian mosin actions

would it be worth the effort to rebarrel one of these to a more preferred caliber, and if so what calibers would be suitable for this action?

I would not bother. In my opinon I would get a good 8mm mauser
action and then you would have something to work with. That is if you steel what to use a military rifle

Take it from a guy that loves my Mausers, get a Savage or Stevens if you want an in-expensive build! Later,

can anyone explain why the are not a good choice, i allways hear of mausers and rems but what is the main flaw in the russian action?

Not sure why. The Finns captured a lot of Mosins during the Winter war and all they did was re-barrel and some minor work without modifying the receiver and you have a super accurate M39. See, those Scandinavians know a thing or two about steel and how to match a barrel to the action.

I don't remember where I saw it, but I have seen one that was restocked and customized by a good gunsmith and it looked surprisingly good. It didn't even appear as a Mosin at first. It might be a good project for you to invest a small amount of money in and see how it turns out.

Jraney, what you're going to use the rifle for? I wouldn't choose Mosin for a project anyway. It's fine as it is. Kind of rebarreling AK-47, if you ask me... Problems include slow lock time, lack of functional safety etc.

For a general hunting rifle, Mauser is a classic. Positive, although slow ignition, positive extraction etc.

For a more modern action, I'd choose Howa first, Savage/Stevens second,Savage if Accutrigger is fine for you, otherwise Stevens and aftermarket trigger).

Here you go, a custom Mosin.

hey i was just thinking that since they are so cheap why don't more people biuld upon them no big deal.

Probably for most of the reasons stated above, too many better actions around. In Finland however its a different story and you sort of have to use what's available if you can't afford a Sako. I'm sure that the rifle as stated is good enough for shooting deer or grouse out of trees. What has to be determined is "is it good enough for the purpose you intend to use it for"? I guess you are the only one that can determine that, but my point was that even a Mosin can be made to look pretty decent in the hands of a competent custom gunsmith. If you want to try it go ahead, you don't have much to lose, and who knows, you may come up with a decent hunting rifle.

Mosin-based hunting rifles in Finland are from past decades, starting after WWII, when surplus rifles were easily obtained, also other than Mosin, like Arisaka).

Although Sako,Beretta) screws Finnish hunters/shooters big time,e.g. Tikka costs almost twice the US price in Finland), most of the guns sold, new or used) are based on more modern designs. Tikka may be most popular, but Savage, Remington, Howa-based brands etc. are also used, lower price than Tikka).

In higher price segment it's Sako or some European "traditional" manufacturers like Mauser, Heym, SIG, Blaser.
