would this be a good starting point

I am wondering if a remington 700 sps would be a good base to start a 6br buildup. It is about the cheapest one, so I figured it would be nice to rebarrel, true action, replace triger, jewell), and maybe later replace stock. What caliber would be the best to get to base the build off of, .243???

Do you have the SPS already? If not, you might consider a Stiller Predator, since you plan to buy a new barrel, trigger, and stock anyway.

I'm building a 6BR on a PredatorV. Total cost for the rifle itself is:

Stiller PredatorV: $740
Krieger barrel: $255
Jewell trigger: already on hand, but about $200 new
H&S Precision stock with ADL trigger guard: $300
Chamber/fit: $175
Total: $1670

If you plan to buy the rifle, and then have a smith true everything up...then no, it would not be a good place to start. By the time you pay for the gun and blueprinting, you will have almost as much in it as a custom made Remington clone. Resale value on a tricked out Remington action is the same as a stock action for the most part. Better off getting a Stiller/Borden/Pierce action to start with. They run from about $700 up to $850 I believe.

I am not worried about resale. I don't sell my personal rifles.
And at my skill level would one of the higher end actions really help me more than a trued 700. I like to shoot, but I will never be where most of you are in terms of skill. I will probably never be able to shoot a good enough group at 600 yards to beat some of your guys 1000 yard shots. That being said. Would i I notice enough of a difference to get the better actions, I know it definitely wouldn't hurt and would be a better base if I did step up into competition.
This is going to be a 6-700 yard varmint rifle, depending on if I can get good enough at that distance. I am playing with my 22-250 to get about a 500 yard setup, again depending on me.

Trapper, Do you already have the 700sps ? If not then what you will spend in buying and getting your sps700 squared up,bushed, etc. you would be farther ahead money wise with a custom action. Now don't get me wrong I have several Truedup, blueprinted) 700s and they really shoot, but i HAD those actions laying around,so I didn't BUY 1 just for the purpose of building a rifle. So long story short, IF you already HAVE The action have the work done, IF not buy a Stiller,Borden,Bat,etc.

No I do not have one already. I can buy one, get everything I want done to it except for stock for under 1000 before taxes, around 1100 after taxes. This is using my gunsmith.

Well PRE TAX- $450.00 SPS gun,Barrel $300,Jewell Trigger $200. Now you might sell the Factory barrel for 40 bucks, trigger too $40. So your Smith is going to put this all together for $130 Chamber, blueprint action, bed the stock,That is a GREAT DEAL. GOOD LUCK :)

sps 425
Hart barrel 300
Barrel labor 175
True action 45

total 935
7% tax 65.45
1000.45
Jewell Trigger 175 ,not decided on so wasn't included)

never planned on selling the old stuff so I would get 80 or so back. Thats half the trigger
That is if I leave it on the factory stock, probably not something I would change later in future which wouldn't be included in initail cost. Might change it fast if I didn't like, so I would add 300 to total plus all the shipping.

I am not sold on doing it this way as the custom actions are a great improvement over what I am thinking of, but I do not know if I myself would be good enough to take advantage of the better equipment, you know what I mean.

You might get the action face and lugs/abutments squared for $45, but to really true an action, getting all surfaces parallel/square/centered to the bolt raceway, and get the bolt-to-raceway fit and firing pin fit as close as a custom action) will cost >$200, I imagine. None of that should be necessary with a custom action.

And there is no such thing as "too accurate." The more accurate the rifle, the more you learn about wind, handloading, and shooting technique with every shot, because the rifle itself never lies.

Very true. I might as well make myself the weak link in the setup. I can learn different techniques to shoot better, but if the gun has flaws, my mess ups could be amplified. So I would probably be better off taking a couple extra months to build it the way I want first off than to try to put something together.

Trapper99 I did what you are talking about doing, but wish I had gone with a custom action now that it is all said and done. I had the Remington 700 action, so I went from there. I still ended up with laying out $1275.00 .
Barrel $315.00
true action $175.00
bolt handle $80.00
sleeve the bolt $80.00
stock $300.00 un-finished
cut the chamber $150.00
Jewell trigger $175.00

You probably would not need your bolt sleeved, but mine was sloppy as all get out, the bolt handle was not what I wanted,so I ended up changing that as well.
My Remmy shoots in the one's, and an occasional o's. It's a 30BR and I use Bib 118 10 ojive bullets. Good luck with your build.
